New Music Friday!

If that play on words with my favorite track off the new album ('Unlike Anything') was on purpose, then well done. If it wasn't, well.. I'm still proud of it.
Hahah wow, that had to have been some kind of predestined subconscious slip as I was listening to that track while writing it out but definitely did not mean to do it. This band’s got me in a trance.

You absolutely have to listen to Oncle Jazz and Untourable Album now.

EDIT: I've listened to it once now and it's waaaaay more acoustic than anything they've done before. It's fine, but not as similar to those other two albums which I think are better.
It's not a complete departure from their signature sound but I get what you're saying. It's like they've substituted the synths with a more organic sound. I personally like the rich, warm rustic tones throughout the album.
It's definitely more subdued, but not unlike anything we've heard from them before.
More subdued perhaps but the album sounds more refined and elegant.

You kind of misquoted me. What I originally said was "This is the first time I've checked out a Men I Trust album in real time as it was released". I have checked out Untourbale and Oncle Jazz, after you and @Hollywood recommended the group (or, rather, were praising the new album) back in 2021.

Edit: though I haven't listened to Untourable and Oncle Jazz in quite some time, I prefer Equus Asinus.

I absolutely did misquote you, I'm sorry! 🫣😳

Untourable was the first album I listened to new, which I thought was way better, but this one will probably grow on me with some time. I feel like getting into a band with a new album when it's not "the fan favorite" is a common thing for me. Off the top of my head I loved "Ultimate Success Today" by Protomartyr because it was new when I started listening to them, same with "A Hero's Death" by Fontaines D.C. when many fans said "Dogrel" was better. An album being new, exciting, and still fresh can help it stick with the listener more than if it's just a listen through their discography if you're casually getting into them.

I miss the vibes, bass, and more jazzy-ness, but I have a feeling the second album we get later this year will be more of that classic MIT sound.

I definitely get this! For me, it seems to be common when a band/artist goes through or is transitioning through a stylist change (e.g., when Opeth went from Death Metal to prog rock in 2011 with 'Herigage' - many fans were disappointed. I loved it [and still do], but I love every Opeth album, to be fair).

100% agree. There is definitely a "honeymoon phase" in listening to a new album in real time.

Another new album not dropped on a Friday!! I much prefer random drops rather than everything on one day. For organization's sake everything on Friday is easy to track, but I never have the time to listen to more than 4-5 albums on any given Friday. Anything more than that many albums I usually end up forgetting about or missing completely.

Update - 3rd listen in and I'm vibing with it more. Maybe it's because I'm a little more tired today but it's working. First 5-6 songs are really nice. The melody on "All My Candles" is so good, I'm sad when it ends. It feels like it could keep going and going.

Right out of the gate this morning, on another huge New Music Friday, Lonnie Holley drops the most powerful album of the year, lyrically, so far, with Tonky. The 9-minute spoken word opening track 'Seeds' had me absolutely drawn in right from the beginning (what an emotional and powerful track). However you want to "genre-ize" his style, be it progressive, psychedelic soul, avant-garde jazz, or experimental funk, this album is a spiritual autobiographical experience. Have I mentioned this is a powerful album? Throughout the album's 14 tracks and 52-minute runtime, Holley brings on several guest features, including: billy woods, Jesca Hoop, Open Mike Eagle, Joe Minter, Alabaster DePlume, Angel Bat Dawid, Mary Lattimore, Saul Williams, and Isaac Brock. Holley really seems to hold nothing back. His self-expression and story-telling are anthems for our past, and for our future. "We might not have it all together, but together we have it all. Let's come together."
