New Music Friday!

I would also like to receive some credit.

I used to work in the record store, I had everything before anyone. I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan. I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes. I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988.

You’re welcome!
I'd actually like to take credit for this post. In 2001, I was at the Grand Canyon with my family. I saw a man standing at the edge of the canyon, claiming he was going to take his own life. I walked up to him and begged him not to do so. I told him he had so much to live for, and that he was likely a very talented musician. I asked him to sing me a song, and he began to mutter the words @TenderLovingKiller® just wrote. He walked off the ledge with me and we went to get a sandwich. The next year he went on to form LCD Soundsystem. That man was James Murphy.

I was also 13 so when he mentioned being naked in Ibiza my dad started to distance me from him a bit.

Ah, but I would like to be given credit for that moment that you described here too.

See, I was the person who helped an young Ed Roland, lead singer of the 90s post-grunge act Collective Soul come up with the chorus for their 1995 hit song, “The World I Know”. See, I was at an Atlanta area bar in early 1994 when I walked into the Men’s restroom to discover Ed, standing a full two feet away from the urinal trying to take a long range piss. So I walked up to Ed and said, “Ed you really should walk up on urinal and step to the edge to see the urinal cake below. See, that’s how you know your are close enough to the urinal, if you can see the urinal cake you’re good”. Now obviously he took some liberties with what I said but it’s basically the same thing.

Next thing I know that song is on modern rock radio ALL THE TIME. Which of course inspired many people to jump off ledges in the latter part of the decade just to escape it’s ever present (yet catchy) melody and experience the sweet relief of endless silence.

So again. You are welcome.

So… Neal Francis… I LOVED his debut and nothing has really had that spark since. I do like
each of his following albums and while Return to Zero is not as good as the debut, it is easily his best work since.

One of my favorite people of all time in the music industry is none other than British singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, Steven Wilson (SW). He has been involved in the music industry professionally since the late 80s and has been involved in countless projects, both his own and with other artists. Most notably for me, SW is the singer, guitarist, and mastermind behind the band Porcupine Tree, he worked closely with Mikael Akerfeldt and Opeth on several of their albums, and he started his own solo career as Steven Wilson in 2008, employing studio and touring musicians to help him perform his music. Porcupine Tree is my favorite project of his (releasing some of my favorite albums in the 90s and especially in the 2000, and being one of my favorite bands of all time), but his solo work is also highly notable, in my opinion, and SW released some of my favorite albums over the last 16 years. And now we are here with his 8th solo LP, The Overview.

With only two tracks (which, depending on where you listen, are either available as two very long tracks, "Objects Outlive Us" and "The Overview", averaging just over 20 minutes each, or they are divided up into shorter parts). However you listen, the album is about 42 minutes in length. SW always tries to do something different with each record, as he likes to confront expectations. His last two solo albums were more electronic and poppy in nature, and less rock than what most SW fans are accustomed to, and The Overview is a return to a more conceptual prog rock approach. This album is conceptually about the overview effect, and SW felt that in order to properly conceptualize this idea, it would need to be in a long form suite that it's presented in. SW is at the point in his career where I don't think he'll be able to top some of his past projects with PT, and with his earlier solo work, but he is still able to output quality, thought-provoking material. And The Overview is just that - not his best release, but still a very solid and (for me) exciting entry in a long career of excellent projects. For the numbers folks, this is a very respectable 8 to 8.5 out of 10 project, and surely a standout for March. I can see SW making and producing music for another 20-30 years still, and I'm completely fine with that. Once again, I tip my hat to you, SW.

Really enjoying this one that wasn't on my list:

THURNIN's third album "Harmr" was born out of the deep feeling of grief that only love can bring. The title refers to an old Icelandic word that is probably more literally translated as 'grief' while its contemporary meaning rather implies 'sorrow'. The loss of one or even more loved beings is hard to bear for any person. It is therefore hardly surprising that the lower key and a reduced tempo are permeating "Harmr" throughout most of the songs

I've seen a lot of hype (both on N&G and on other sites) for the new  Spiritbox album, Tsunami Sea (dropped March 7th). So I, somewhat reluctantly, decided to check it out. The "somewhat reluctantly" is my tendency to steer away from the metalcore scene, as it's not a subgenre I'm particularly fond of. And Tsunami Sea landed about where I expected. It was decent. There were some excellent moments (e.g. opening track 'Fata Morgana' was an absolute beast of a track - best on the album by far, and Courtney LaPlante's vocals were pretty damn good across the record). There were, for me, anyway, some lows on this album, too, but those are likely just a personal preference/taste issue. Don't wanna yuck on anyone's yums here. This is a solid 7 outta 10 album for me, but I can see why a lot of folks are hyping this one up a lot more. I know @Piratenovelist gave this one a 9.5 outta 10 and is considering it aoty material. So what about this album are y'all loving?
