New ultrasonic vinyl cleaner in the works: Humminguru

Maybe 3-4 months ago, I checked in with you all after losing my ziplock bag of filter / wheel replacements for this thing during my move to Chicago. A couple of you were experimenting with using fish tank filters at the time. However, I held off on ordering up because my turntable has been out of commission.

I should have a functional table by mid-July so I wanted to circle back as someone who hasn't been following this thread.

A) I see some comments about newer Guru's with issues. How are the OG models holding up for people who have been using them regularly? And how long are the wheels lasting?

B) Has there come to be a consensus product / approach to dealing with replacement filters? Because getting a replacement pack appears to cost an arm and a leg when shipping is included. And last time I was using this guy (March), the filter was used to the point of not doing a good job keeping dirth water from leaking out during the re-pour. So I def need some new ones.
Mine was an OG machine, received in November last year, pleased to say after the issues I was having it turned out to be the dreaded Thermo Switch that was causing mine to cut out, so after several days of toing and froing I've finally got it working again by bypassing the Thermo as told by Happywell.

Regarding the filters, I did buy a load from them, but they are identical to the ones used in Jewel fish tanks, just need cutting down to size, so I'll go down that route once I've gone through all mine.

On another note how many cleans do people do per one lot of Distilled Water? i generally use the water until it goes cloudy, which is between 8-16 records.

Welcome!

I also go maybe a dozen records per tank, depending on how dirty they are to start.

I’ve developed my own filtering system for re-pouring the water back into the unit for each cleaning—basically, it’s going through four layers of filtering material like that provided with the HG, plus a coffee filter. I’ve cleaned as many as 30 records in a session, and the water hasn’t ever seemed particularly dirty at the end of the session. Of note, most of what I’m cleaning is new and/or not very dirty.

Fortunately, with distilled water being fairly inexpensive ($1/gallon), I don’t really bother with filtering much. The dirty water goes into the houseplants. I get up to 10 records cleaned per 400 ml of distilled water.

2 questions-

A) The water container that has the filter (as opposed to the tank that the record sits in) is doing a poor job of keeping water in while pouring. Instead of just coming through the filter / spout, water is also leaking through the cracks when I pour it back into the tank.

B) My Guru is emmiting more of a whistle than it used to. Specifically during the cleaning portion. While drying, it's still on the quiter end. Anyone else experience this? Could it be a water level thing? I've just noticed it this morning over the course of 4-5 cleans.

There isn’t a seal between the lid and the container, it will leak. I hold them together whilst poring back in.

It can do that sometimes, I don’t think it’s water level but I do check my level every 5 or so record and top up as required.

It sounds like a tea kettle is going off.

I’ve been reading this thread with a lot if interest and just subscribed to it. I use a SpinClean but I’ve been interested in a ultrasonic cleaner but not the high cost of them. The HG hits a great price point which is why I’m following this thread.

I found this YouTube video posted a few months ago that I thought was interesting. It was on Ken Micallef’s YouTube channel. What I found really interesting were all the comments and answers from the speaker, Miguel Bario, Ken’s friend who is a physicist and audiophile . He uses a SpinClean, a HG and a Degritter. He debunked the video reviewers who dump their vacuum cleaner contents on a disk as a test saying that’s not what an ultrasonic cleaner is designed to do. He describes his cleaning regimen and answered a lot of questions regarding the HG. One comment that stood out to me was this one: “ You might think cleaning records is about removing ticks and pocks...Surely you'd want to get rid of ticks and pops, but what I have found (along with many others that have looked into this) is that the removal of some sort of coating on the grooves leads to a dramatically opened and more transparent sonic presentation. You really have to try it... What is it? I presume it is some chemical leftover or some such thing. The effect is noticeable in most records and remarkable in others, even new pressings.

I’ve never used an ultrasonic cleaner but I might have to put the Humminguru on my short list and give it a try!

That’s great! In fact, I’m pretty sure I made a similar statement way back in this thread about realizing it’s about a lot more than the pops and ticks.
