New ultrasonic vinyl cleaner in the works: Humminguru

Another sad update from me (not trying to be negative, but figure it could be useful for others to know about issues with the machines) - after a few weeks of working well with a new PCB and power supply, suddenly the rotor has stopped working (for a second time). I've written to them suggesting there should be a warranty on spare parts - if they would send a replacement for free I'll repair it, otherwise that's me with this HG.

The good news was that I've done all my African 7s, and most of my collection. The bad news is that I still had maybe 50 7s to clean and a few hundred albums. I kind of have to have a cleaner. But paying $50-60 every couple of months (and not being able to use the machine for the month it takes for diagnosis, mailing etc) doesn't strike me as sustainable now. Not sure what to do next though...
You do seem to be running this thing harder than a lot of folks here by virtue of your huge collection, so your frustration is very understandable. I hope they are able to help you out. Otherwise, maybe it's time for a more industrial, 6-LP at a time setup?

I mean my takeaway from this thread is that it’s a great machine for someone starting out or with a small collection.

After I have the rest of my system finalized, I will research ultrasonic cleaners and get one, but this thread has been very helpful in helping me realize this machine ain’t for me.

Yeah, I feel like over a certain collection size it's worth investing in either a commercial-type machine or something high-end like a Degritter, at least if you're thinking about it in terms of running cost per LP cleaned.

Though I guess the other argument is that you could buy six Hummingurus for the cost of one Degritter and have the best of both worlds (once you also budget for some hearing protection).

I can't imagine the noise of 6 of these things running all at once.

I’ve cleaned 1500+ LPs with it with minimal issues. Had to swap the PCB out which was an 5 minute fix and about $50 in parts/shipping. Others here have cleaned as many or more. The Vevor ones are a no go for me because I just don’t have space for a huge drying rack for my records. Degritter is also a no go for me because it’s like $3,000 which would be more than any individual component in my whole system.

I’m also not running it into the ground though and doing like 30 Lps a day or anything like that so maybe that’s a difference. I clean them when I get something new in and go back through my collection to do more when I’m around the house and have some time. I wouldn’t let a handful of issues people have had completely dissuade you. It’s been a great piece of gear for me. Not sure what other affordable options are out there that may fit what you’re looking for. The autodry is a big plus for me.

I think one thing to keep in mind too is that they tell you not to run this thing non-stop without giving it time to cool down. I think that's an easy thing to ignore and it pushes it beyond what a starter model like the HG is designed to handle. But for a clean as you go model, working on new pickups rather than trying to go through a massive collection, I think it works really well. And even with a massive collection, I think it can work well if you aren't testing it's limits. I don't know if that's what happened to everyone on here, but probably a few based on what I've read. Also if you do a cost analysis, how many times are you going to run your whole collection through it? Even if you go through two or three of these until you get the collection cleaned and are only doing new additions or occasionally cleaning an old record again, you don't really need more than this and you'd still come out spending less than getting one of the heavy duty ones.

To be clear, none of this is meant to suggest that @Poly-Rythmo is at all at fault for anything he's experienced. He is just likely an outlier data point.
Absolutely. I'm sure there are lemons out there and it absolutely sucks to be in the situation @Poly-Rythmo is in especially after all the waiting and fixes. I'd be beyond annoyed too. But I'm about 500 in and feel like I've gotten my money's worth already. I know I'd pay an extra dollar for each of my records to arrive ultrasonically cleaned and in a poly liner. I have 2500 to go, so I'm sure mine will shit the bed before then, but it's still been a heck of a purchase that I have no regrets over.

I'd also state that I'm still overall happy with my purchase. I've cleaned a lot of vinyl - and given that most of it is getting 2 x double cleans, it's been a lot of cleaning. It may also be that cleaning the 7s has pushed it over the edge. I find to clean a 7 properly you have to fill the water to the absolute maximum and there's fairly often some leakage, which probably doesn't do it too good. I do also tend to run it in batches, but not super hard. I feel I've got my money's worth in any case. And I genuinely don't know what to do next. I'm tempted by a Degritter in some ways. But having just cleaned several thousands slabs of vinyl, I don't really want to go through all that again. And I'm with @MikeH - it would seem odd for it to be by far the dearest part of my set-up.

I have only cleaned a handful of 7" or 10" but could definitely see water leaking in as I found the same you did--you really need to fill it up close to the brim to get all the 7" cleaned.

i rarely find the need to clean something ultrasonically again at this point. but i also don't live in a dusty environment, am pet free, etc. the machine has already paid for itself for me. i have gotten so much more usage out of it than the VPI vacuum cleaner I had.

Yeah I think I probably drove mine to the edge in the first 5 months I owned it too. It still works but I’m almost waiting for it to fail again and I am not sure that I’d be replacing it like for like. Although that said now the collection is done I’d never have to drive it so hard again. Who knows? I think for the price it is a great machine.

Since I read the first messages of it failing, I definitely became more strategic in what I cleaned. I did all my African and Colombian albums first. Last month or so, I've done 300 or so African 7s. So it's less painful now. That said, I've found the best results on new, not really worn, vinyl so I'm reluctant to go without a cleaner.

I mean the concerns about 7” are not exactly convincing me otherwise, y’all. I certainly don’t have as many as @Poly-Rythmo but am currently at ~250
It's your money. If you want and can buy an expensive one none of us should convince you otherwise. The one @Mather bought is certainly better, for instance. But for those on a budget this one works well for it's life span.

I was getting a lot of crap out of the ones that I’d previously used the spin clean for. Bits of white fibre on most. I got stuck into a routine then…
Yep, my Spinclean was better than just wiping with a cloth and spray, but it's no comparison to the HG. I've had to redo all those too. It really does make a noticeable difference on new records, so much more than I ever anticipated.
