The New York Rangers have locked in on San Jose Sharks star Timo Meier as their top target for the upcoming trade deadline, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reports.

Meier is arguably the best player rumored to be available for the March 3 frenzy. The versatile 26-year-old has logged 48 points in 51 games this season while firing 227 shots and adding 107 hits across nearly 20 minutes per contest.

He carries a $6-million cap hit before becoming a restricted free agent this summer. Meier's qualifying offer will then be $10 million.

Sharks general manager Mike Grier worked in the Rangers' front office as a hockey operations advisor before taking over in San Jose this past offseason. He also has a longstanding relationship with Rangers GM Chris Drury from their playing days with the Buffalo Sabres in the mid-2000s.

The Rangers have approximately $6.7 million in deadline cap space, according to Cap Friendly. On top of financial flexibility, New York has the assets to swing for the fences before the deadline. The club has two first-round picks in 2023, young NHLers in Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko, as well as a prospect pipeline headlined by 2021 first-rounder Brennan Othmann.

The market for forwards was set earlier this week as former Vancouver Canucks captain Bo Horvat was shipped to the New York Islanders for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty, and a conditional first-round pick in 2023.

The New Jersey Devils have also been linked to Meier after GM Tom Fitzgerald recently said he's looking to add a top-six forward with cost control at the deadline.

As it stands, the Devils and Rangers are set to face each other in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Marty Walsh, the current U.S. Secretary of Labor, is set to be named executive director of the NHL Players' Association, reports Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.

He succeeds Donald Fehr, who's departing the position after 12 years. A formal announcement on Walsh's appointment is expected at some point following President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

The NHLPA has been searching for a new leader for roughly 10 months. Walsh emerged as a leading candidate over recent weeks and introduced himself to the executive board in a virtual meeting before All-Star Weekend. A formal vote requiring 18 approvals among the 32 team representatives still needs to take place, but Walsh is expected to be elected unanimously, Seravalli adds.

Walsh was mayor of Boston from 2014-21 until he joined Biden's cabinet. He made himself available for the NHLPA job after he wasn't selected as Biden's next chief of staff.

Former player agent and Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis was also a finalist for the job.

New Jersey Devils head coach Lindy Ruff announced star forward Jack Hughes is week-to-week with an upper-body injury, according to team reporter Amanda Stein.

Hughes, 21, is in the midst of a career season with 35 goals and 67 points in 50 contests.

More to come.

Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar announced superstar defenseman Cale Makar will miss at least two games with a head injury, according to The Athletic's Peter Baugh.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jeff Carter hit Makar high in Tuesday's overtime loss. He briefly left the contest but ultimately returned.

The NHL Department of Player Safety didn't review the hit, and it wasn't deemed a penalty in real time.

Makar and the Avalanche voiced their displeasure with the hit after the contest. The reigning Norris and Conn Smythe winner called it "pretty blindside," while Bednar said Carter "skated right through" Makar's head.

The Avalanche will be without Makar for Thursday's Stanley Cup Final rematch against the Tampa Bay Lightning as well as Saturday's clash against the Florida Panthers. Colorado returns home for another contest with the Bolts on Feb. 14.

Makar missed four games earlier this season with an upper-body injury. He's putting together yet another spectacular campaign with 45 points in 45 appearances while logging over 27 minutes per contest.
