I know. Chariot actually scored 2 of their goals.
Well one of them would have ended up a tap in by Couts if that makes you feel any better. So adjusting for that the Flyers are now 3-24 on the PP in the series.

My point is that they've absolutely been winning 5v5, even though it's been ugly, regressive 90s hockey. Probably a product of just how annoying it is going against this version of the Habs and how much the Flyers rely on the forecheck instead of controlled zone entries.

And this just so happened to be the most entertaining game of the series, imo. The end to end stuff was kind of nice.

Canucks make a big second period comeback to push the Blues to the brink. Tyler Motte has a great couple of goals, and Markstrom absolutely held them in there when they needed to stop the bleeding.

Man, Ryan O’Reilly is scaring me right now. The guys is terrorizing us almost every shift, and if Markstrom hasn’t been as great as he has been, O’Reilly would have three more goals at least.

One more win.......

Hardly. 4 goals in 5 games at 5-on-5 is hardly winning. They got good bounces in tight games against the worst team to make the playoffs.

That said, I doubt the Habs can make it out of this hole. The Flyers are deeper with talent.

The Corsi maps show that the Flyers only dominated the starts of games 1 and 4, and did a decent job in the last minutes of game 3.

I like Corsi and am very much an advanced stats person, but think it should be taken with a grain of salt when used for the team that finished the season second in the league in CF% but 24th in points.

Very good point! Nevertheless, those graphs coincide well with the eye test for this series, except for game 4 IMO. The second half of that game is the only one where the Habs were ahead in possession but looked listless on the ice and they didn't really get a good look on the net- their chances were all periphery. Games 2 and 5 were all Habs at 5-on-5. Game 3 was even until the Flyers scored then the Habs had the advantage 5-on-5 for the rest of the game - it could have easily gone the other way given the 4 posts they hit but Hart was superb - and the Flyers were great in the dying minutes, which you can also see on the graph. Game 1 also swung towards the Habs halfway but Hart was the difference here too. The Habs have been taking a lot of penalties too, which even if the Flyers don't score, kills momentum.

Either way, you can't say the Flyers have been winning 5-on-5 in this series. It's the opposite. They got owned in 2 games and they've been sitting back on their leads, with success at the ends of games 1, 3 and 4. Which, to be fair, may be a good strategy against the Habs since they don't really have any proven game breaking scoring talent (though I'm hopeful that Suzuki and Kotkaniemi's performances these playoffs are a glimpse at the future).

All this to say that even if they lose the series, I'm very pleased with the Habs. They made this a series when I was expecting a much more dominating performance from the Flyers.

Flyers don't have the players to make crisp line to line passes to beat the press so they're forced to dump and retrieve. When the Habs are winning the Flyers are turning it over in their own zone and Habs are getting it out of theirs quick and going the other way. It's definitely a more aesthetically pleasing version of hockey. When the Flyers are winning they're forcing MTL to grind it out on the boards with them. It's ugly and I don't like it!

Oh thank God. What did he do this time? I have no idea how that clown is allowed on tv.
one of the other announcers talking about players life in the bubble and he chimes in with a “and no women to distract them,” which went over about as well as you’d expect. That was going to tick someone off anyway, but NBC is pushing several inclusion initiatives too hard to just let that slide.

Probably not enough for them to totally turf him, but gawd he's gotta go.
