No Buy Vinyl Support Thread

Trying to get out of the mindset that I need to keep my originals when I upgrade. Sitting at about 35 OGs that I should be able to part with but feel like a part of me will exit when I do. Let the internal struggle continue…
I think a lot of people have that issue too. I get rid of the originals (if it’s an original after the 2000s) if the upgraded copy sounds significantly better/cleaner sounding, etc.

This is a tough one for me too. Part of it is that most of my OGs were my dad's and they're the only thing I have left from him since he died when I was five. It's silly to be sentimental over these old discs, but it's still hard to let go. Since I don't have any kids of my own, I keep hoping that one of my nieces or my nephew will get into vinyl and I can give them a nice start with some of their grandpa's records. I know at least one of my nieces would really appreciate that, but she's still young and has to share a room with her little sister so no space. I know I'd feel better doing that because otherwise when I die they won't be special to anyone else.

Adding to my prior post but something I want to try to do less of this year is buy new records. Not that I’m going to stop entirely, I’m just getting fed up with $40 records that often have some kind of pressing defect when I could grab 3-4 used records and clean them up.

I did a lot of waiting for sales this past year and I think that’ll be more of how I buy this upcoming year.

Feeling that BIG time. I've been saying this a lot to record collector friends in the last half dozen years or so. Hell, probably a decade now. It's crazy to me that there are legitimately plants that don't have their stampers properly calibrated and will consistently have a side A or B off center. The folks listening to test presses often have no idea what they're listening for.

Attempting to keep it on topic, I plan to adopt a similar @Rip_City approach and with the exception of a couple titles I've been waiting for for months or a new release that blows me away, give it my best on a no buy Q1.

It's such a let down to wait months and months for something and then it comes out and you get pitch variations or non-fill or whatever. I have a Chet Baker record from RSD that has a supremely hot passage on one track that sounds like my tweeter is blown. I have the anniversary edition of What's Going On that is unplayable because of the pitch fluctuations. I have a copy of The Awakening that sounds like the piano is out of tune from it being off center. Throw in my recent experience with LITA bundle. I think I'm gonna try to stick to $20 max for a new record and just shop sales. I miss the days of being able to go into a shop and spend like $15-20 per record and my biggest worry was whether it was a CD rip on vinyl.

Even though I ended up buying more than 1 record this year, I don't think I bought my first one until June or July. That being said, now that my two biggest "wants" have been reissued, I plan to only buy from most artists that are currently in my roster. Like I know that The Decemberists will be releasing a new album in 2024, so that will be a must buy. I would love to be able to get our current collection under 1k, but I am not sure that will be possible. Good luck to everyone in the new year. Stay strong and stream first!

Add me to the nobuy group. I am not going to stop buying completely but I easily sold/am selling 500-700 records. We are using it to fund travel and music tickets. We are also going through my records, cleaning and playing each one that I said I wanted to keep, to make sure I want to keep it. Right now we have somewhere around 2000-2500 records.

That is impressive! We have around 300 that are ready to leave the house, but I'd like to go through the remaining collection(1,200+) and see if there are more.

I gave about 20 to a friend after pifsgiving and I sold 50 at my local last week that had been sitting in a box to take for months. But those were mostly doubles and freebies. I made a list of about another 250 to sell, but a lot of it is stuff that I know my local won't want since a good chunk is too obscure for them. Not sure how I'll move those out yet.

I had this problem. Some of the obscure stuff, I am selling on cogs.

I would do that but so many are not worth more than a few bucks each and I just can't be bothered for that. It'll cost me more in time and effort than I'd get. Might do a donation if I get sick of having them in my closet and can't think of a better idea.
