A late night staple, play an album that reminds you of the beach or makes you bounce, slo-mo not required (but encouraged).

Changing the channel for some late night with David Hasselhoff.

Calvin Harris "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1" (2017 Columbia)
This is bouncy and beachy. Album title and cover image are as on point as I've ever been for a prompt, if I do say so myself.

Beach House - Teen Dream
E090D012-50E6-4263-A1AD-26A5450D4DDE.jpeg
Beach House’s Teen Dream would probably only be beach music for kids that don’t enjoy going to the beach. I chose it more because it had “Beach” in the band name and Pamela Anderson was apart of many Teen Dream’s in the 90s.

Also, they performed on Late Night…

11:30 PM ❺ NBC Late Night With Conan O’Brien
Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See

Searching “live Conan” in YouTube revealed a treasure trove of excellent options (and kept me entertained through much of the morning). For me, the history of Conan’s late night career coincided nicely with me coming of age. The same time I was first getting into music on my own was at the same time Conan was just starting off. So it’s interesting and fun to rewatch some of these early performances again now knowing how both me and these musicians would grow into the music. I was really hard pressed to choose a single performance, but ultimately went with this probably because It was in a bit of a Dream Pop mood following Beach House.

In the Year of Chillwave (2009-2010), we hung out at the beach with Washed Out, Tori y Moi, Neon Indian, and Beach Boys’ Sunflower on repeat. Gimme my slow-mo bonus points!

Play an album by a musical guest featured on the show or album inspired by the show itself. (Bonus points if you include the Conan performance in your post)

Radiohead - Pablo Honey

Conan’s very first musical guests played “Creep”

Jimmy Buffet -A1A

Maybe not the first Buffett album people think of, but definitely my favorite. I have driven part of the “scenic” A1A highway and stopped at some of the towns (and beaches!) on the way south.

Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle

Sure, Max Weinberg didn't play on this album (he joined a year later and his first album with Springsteen was Born to Run) BUT being Conan's in-house drummer, it only seemed appropriate. I'd wager he's performed with Conan the most ;)

Surfin' through early surfy sounds of the Gizzverse like kicking back on weird beaches with songs like "Summer!" and "Life is Cool"

The Beastie Boys "Licensed to Ill" - look, I LOVE the Beastie Boys but the lyrical content on this one is just a little too much! You know when you are playing something for someone nodding along, hoping they are enjoying it, that is until you realize that the next line is going to get a negative reaction and you are starting to create an explanation in your head for when they turn to you and are like, wait what? Well I get that feeling WITHOUT the person listening with me way too often with this record!
AND
The Gang Tried to Kill Me! - Best damn bar band in all the land!!!

Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour

For the longest time I consider The Office to be my favorite show of all time so I have to tune in to it! But I must say I think the annoying alone presence of it kinda soured it for me so that made it easy for the Good Place to takes its place as my all time favorite show.

Hot take incoming
As for this album, I think it does have some beautiful lyrics but the majority of the lyrics are non stop cringe fest a. Space Cowboy being the worst offender which makes me groan every time I hear it

Yep, this band still makes me cringe. I feel like they're up my alley, and bought these thinking that, but I just can't. I need to sell these 4 if anyone is interested.

Stereolab - doesn't matter which album, but this is the one I played.

The fact that I own this album makes me cringe. No idea where I got it, but Peter Cetera as the lead singer era of Chicago is just about as bad / smooth / cringy as it gets, just so 80's and formulaic.

That being said, I can definitely see Michael Scott rocking this album in his car. And also owning the Time Life Ultimate Love Songs collection that "You're The Inspiration" was also featured on, having bought it off the late night commercial in preparation for his schoolgirl outfit night with Jan.

Dry Cleaning "Stumpwork" (2022 4AD)
I mean, that album cover. Though, bonus points to the design team for putting a drain on the record label. Weirdly feels like it's draining while the record is spinning.

Play a bar band (bonus points if they are from Philadelphia).

Going for the double today too...

Sheer Mag "Sheer Mag" (2016 Wilsuns Recording Company)
Philadelphia punk band that forged their identity by playing in local dive bars.
