Steely Dan - Aja The US version of The Office began a run of comedies that I absolutely adored in the late 2000s, for at least one shining moment a few years later Thursday Night on NBC included The Office, Parks & Rec, Community, & 30 Rock. When paired with Sunny In Philadelphia and The League that aired on FX also on Thursday night you ended up with arguable the best night of Comedy I have experienced in my entire life. Unfortunately that moment was fleeting and though many of those NBC show have grown into well regarded classics amongst the viewing public at the time it seemed like more critics watched those shows than your average TV viewer. The US version of The Office softened the edges of the UK original and while the US version did experience a rocky start and an even rougher “post-Michael Scott” period the middle portion was almost perfect in its balance of Cringe and Heart. I chose Steeley Dan because they are a band that causes many to cringe. I used to be one of those people but over the years I have grown to appreciate their mix of precision perfect jazz rock with biting and witty lyrical content.
I also couldn’t find my CD copy of The Hunted “That One Night”.

Marah - Kids In Philly Marah a the Philly Bar Band. Thanks to some famous fans (Stephen King, Nick Hornby) folks outside of the City of Brotherly Love caught on their brand of “Springsteen but if he sang about Philly instead of Jersey” vibe. Fun fact about Sunny, the show has been on the air for 16 seasons (and under contract for at least 2 more) which makes it the longest running live-action Sitcom in TV history.

They may have started as a bar band called Ninja Dick, but they ended up headlining the Pawnee Unity Festival and bonding the world with their timeless memorial for Lil' Sebastian.
My favorite musical act from these shows was Tracy Jordan's novelty song "Werewolf Bar Mitzvah" ...
...Which is both the 2nd best Halloween song, behind "The Monster Mash", and the 2nd best Bar Mitzvah song behind The Black Eyed Peas staple "I've Got A Feeling".
Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey & The Groo Grux King
Various different reasons for this one. I’ll just say UGH.

The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
THS was always going to be my pick for “bar band” for so many reasons. Especially Barfruit Blues on Almost Killed Me. Since Barfruit Blues mentions Hallelujah/Holly, I figured I’d go with an album where Holly is prominent throughout.

Bar band
Back in 2006, the band I was in at the time opened for Brandi Carlile at Ann Arbor's best live music bar - The Blind Pig. I wasn't familiar with her music at the time but I do remember she packed the house, and that whoever her tour drummer was, he had a really nice kit; tuned so nice, it was a pleasure to play on it.

Philadelphia band started playing at a local drag club. That counts as a bar band kinda, right?
Half of the cringe picks are going to make my weekend playlist, but I digress...

From muscianguide.com:
The career path of the Philadelphia/southern New Jersey heavy metal act Cinderella seems to have been stolen right out of a rock and roll fairy tale. The bar band was discovered by Jon Bon Jovi (when he was at the height of his own popularity with his hard rock band, Bon Jovi), and Cinderella's 1986 debut, Night Songs, would sell 30 million copies worldwide within a three-year span--without a hit single. This was a first in rock music history. "More than anything, Cinderella was the right band at the right time," wrote Newsday critic John Milford. He called the band "an '80s version of Aerosmith that arrived just in front of a flood of acts (from Guns N' Roses to Metallica) [who] subsequently combined to give hard rock and/or heavy metal immense commercial clout."
The actual origins of Cinderella are somewhat murky. It is certain, however, that vocalist and guitarist Tom Keifer played in a number of cover bands up and down the East Coast bar circuit, and for a time he was so destitute he slept in his Plymouth Duster, ate boxed grits, and pilfered from a cornfield in the area. By 1985 he had settled in Philadelphia and was working with fellow aspiring musician Eric Brittingham. The two delivered film to developing outlets during the day and rehearsed and gigged together by night. In order to break out of the go-nowhere bar scene of Philadelphia and South Jersey, Keifer and Brittingham knew they would have to come up with original material, not just perform endless covers of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath tunes like their competition. Slowly they built up a repertoire of original material; eventually they became the house band at a bar called the Galaxy in South Jersey. They also ventured often into Philadelphia to play at a club called the Empire.
Not sure the significance of the grits being boxed, but I have learned not to argue with the internet.
I came home from work rather exhausted (being my first day back after being off sick for nearly a week), so I missed the 8pm airing of The Office, if you know what I mean…

GA-20 - Crackdown
Blues bands like these guys are what I think of when the term “bar band” comes to mind and, as far as I know, they tour in bars and small clubs. They were in Edmonton at Blues on Whyte just last year (the night before RSDBF, known as “Thanksgiving” to most of y’all) which, sadly, I didn’t end up going to see.
My wife puts up with my Sun Ra shenanigans, so I can't begrudge her this one at all - particularly since this one has some strong sentimental value to her. I don't know if it makes me cringe more because of what it sounds like, or because it's something that I would've probably liked when I was younger! Also, I just recently learned my friend used to play bass for these guys for a couple of years before this was recorded, which was also a couple of years before we met. Wild.

I saw these guys play in a few different bars when they were playing together. I also saw every one of them play in two or more bars with other bands before, during and after their time together with this band.
