November Challenge Thread: All-Stars Edition!

November 10
"What do you mean you want to do a solo album? You’re the drummer!!"

Thinking back to what you played on Day 8, play a side project that involves that days artist.
It could be a solo project or an earlier or future band they were a member of, or just a misstep because they thought the world wanted to hear an entire record of bass solos. Bonus points if it ties into yesterdays play as well.

Tom Tom Club "Tom Tom Club" (1981 Sire Japan)
Talking Heads side project. Does this tie-in to Bowie somehow? I don't know... Tom Tom Club and Major Tom? Also, later post-2000's iterations of Tom Tom Club added a Jamaican band member named Mystic Bowie. I'll allow it!

Heatmiser - Mic City Sons

This one is too rare and pricey to get on vinyl, so I'm going digital (CDs are forever!). Before and during the early part of his solo career, Elliott Smith was in this band. Tying in with yesterday's pick, this album, like most of Elliott's stuff, was also mixed by Rob Schnapf.

Crowded House -
Woodface

IMG_7655.jpeg

After college, a long time ago, I moved to the UK and worked there for six months. Prior to that, I knew of Crowded House only as the band that did “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” My boss there was Australian and referred to them as the greatest band that ever existed and when I responded “that one-hit wonder band?” I was met with one of the most disappointed looks I’ve ever seen a face make. He bought me their greatest hits compilation the following day, stressing that this was merely a start. And he was right. Also, just so happened that on my flight back, the plane just played the Crowded House concert film, which I (and a six year old kid sitting across the aisle from me) watched while the rest of the plane slept.

Neil Finn is one of the greatest, most consistent songwriters out there and most recent record this year was fantastic.

Patterson Hood is one of the principal singers of the Drive~By Truckers.

This album kicks off with "Uncle Disney" which is based off the theory that Walt Disney's head is frozen until technology exists to bring him back, futurama style I suppose.

When they thaw out Uncle Disney
Gonna be some changes made
Pointing fingers, asking questions
Forty years of decisions made

Anyway, Disney now owns the rights to some of the Jim Henson Studio assets, like the muppets.

Jim Henson also made Labyrinth, staring David Bowie.

And they are still fantastic live, as their set at the Ohana Festival this year proved. One of my highlights of the weekend.

Day 8: That band

When I was 15, I moved from a very small town to the suburbs of NOLA. I had never liked the radio friendly country music that all of my friends in Mississippi loved, but I didn’t know what I liked until I started hanging out with the kids in Louisiana. I found punk rock music and that was my obsession for the next 7 years and really beyond. It started me down a path of music and counter culture exploration.

Style Council - Cafe Bleu
Sticking Paul Weller. For many people The Style Council was a bit of a lost period for Paul, with its faux jazz and 80s production values. But I stand by this album as having several of Paul's best songs. And I think Paul does as well. When I saw him play in September he played 3 songs from this album to a huge positive reaction from the audience.

Brett Gurewitz, the guitarist for Bad Religion, is also a founder of Epitaph Records and producer of some great albums and artists including NoFX.

NoFX lead singer Fat Mike also is the lead singer for Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and they have been known to do a cover of Heroes from David Bowie on tour.

Day 8: @Turbo hosted September 2021 themed on the Talking Heads. Everyone has “that band / artist” for themselves.

Sun Ra Arkestra – Live At Pit-Inn Tokyo, Japan, 8, 8, 1988
20241109_174336.jpg

I was originally gonna go a slightly less obvious route with this one, but then I got my Soundohm package on Friday that included a couple of new Ra reissues, now here we are. My initial curiosity about Sun Ra was due to his name coming up as an inspiration for different artists through my teenage years. Hearing "Nuclear War" in my early twenties piqued my curiosity further and thus began my long journey through the Omniverse. The scope of his extensive catalog is almost unfathomable, from moments of sublime beauty to peaks of abrasive dissonance -- all while Sunny maintained a true "don't give a fuck whether you get it or not" attitude. This vibed especially well with my having taken on Ice Cube's lyric, "You don't like how I'm living? Well, fuck you!" to heart. Being a Sun Ra fan is a bit like being an archeologist at times -- there is so much to unravel, a great many contradictions, and still more discoveries all the time. It's amazingly simple and deeply complex at the same time. Meanwhile, long before either thing became a thing, Sunny was punk rock in releasing his music through his own label with small-run guerilla pressings that the band would put together before, during, and after the gigs; not to mention he was a great visionary of Afrofuturism before Afrofuturism existed. Sun Ra and his Arkestra a perfect for the ADHD brain... they're a gift that keeps on giving!

Day 9: The May 2022 challenge was ‘6 degrees of Kevin Gray' by @jamieanderson1968 (who takes over tomorrow).
  • Play something linked to your Day 8 album and indicate how it links, bonus internet points if you can tie it to David Bowie.
Kronos Quartet – Outer Spaceways Incorporated (Kronos Quartet & Friends Meet Sun Ra)
1000010420.jpg

Besides being a tribute to Sun Ra, this outing also features Arkestra stalwart (and current leader) Marshall Allen collaborating on 3 tracks with Laurie Anderson, who was, of course, married to Lou Reed who had a very storied friendship with none other than... David Bowie!

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – 'S Make It
1000010421.jpg

John Gilmore could have been huge if he hadn't dedicated his life to Sun Ra's Arkestra. A huge influence on Coltrane, he was a helluva sax player. For a brief period when times were tight, Gilmore did leave the Arkestra to record some sessions with McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard and Andrew Hill; as well as tour and record this session with the mighty Art Blakey.

Day 10

So I’ve told how I didn’t listen to Nickel Creek for years because I thought they were a Canadian Rock band. Well, in case you didn’t already think I was a dumb ass…

When I discovered Punch Brothers in the winter of 2014, I didn’t realize that I had already been a fan of Chris Thile. In 2011, I snatched up the first Goat Rodeo album as a long time fan of the other three musicians. Yo-Yo Ma being the one I knew best and Edgar Meyer being a bit of an obsession for a while at that point.

Bonus point time - it was about three or four months later when I made the connection that Aoife sang on that first Goat Rodeo album. My wife laughed at me and said yeah, that was the song she did when she joined Thile and company on the stage that night in Boone. (She appears here as well).

William Tyler & The Impossible Truth - Secret Stratosphere

Came upon William Tyler years back and have enjoyed the desert rock vibes, along with contributing with so many other artists. One of the best was seeing him playing a set at Pickathon when Hiss Golden Messenger and Mandolin Orange got together to cover an open spot that I think was due to the heat and one of the artists not being able to play. He shined on a stage full of great talent. This record might be his best, depends on the day.

Disregard due to my lack of paying attention to the calendar.

John Peel died 20 years ago this year. A tastemaker for several generations and famous for inviting artists on to his radio show to record a “Peel Session".

Play a Peel session or a record that somebody here hyped you to that you now absolutely love

Got this expanded version of this album from @TenderLovingKiller® via Secret Santa a few years ago, and the expanded portion includes 3 peel session tracks.
