Well crap. Looks like I was a day ahead on my choice.

Day 9: The May 2022 challenge was ‘6 degrees of Kevin Gray' by jamieanderson1968 (who takes over tomorrow).
  • Play something linked to your Day 8 album and indicate how it links, bonus internet points if you can tie it to David Bowie.

Heba Kadry mastered both Julia's Something in the Room She Moves and my 2022 AotY. I guess this is as clear as any of an indicator that I should add her to my list of mastering engineers to keep an ear out for when a release drops with her involvement.

"What do you mean you want to do a solo album? You’re the drummer!!"

Thinking back to what you played on Day 8, play a side project that involves that days artist.
It could be a solo project or an earlier or future band they were a member of, or just a misstep because they thought the world wanted to hear an entire record of bass solos

Not really a side project, but it was an interesting side-step for Waits, right as he was trying to settle into the kind of artist he was going to be for the next phase of his career.

I can't really tie this into Day 9 aside from: Women Sing Waits / Woman Sings with Waits.

Silver Jews - American Water

William Tyler played on later Silver Jews records. But I don't have those so I'm playing this one!

Julia Holter's spouse! Outside of third track "Revealed Night" which is a purely instrumental track of drones and sirens, Julia lends her voice to each track of this record. An ethereal oasis of kaleidoscopic drones, quiet frenzied drums from Corey Fogel (also a band member of Julia's prior work), foundational low frequencies from double bassist Devin Hoff, and otherwise omnipresent hums and vocals from Julia set the scene of visualizing a hazy dreamscape of frayed edges.
This blessing of two Julia records after a studio recording drought of over five years has been the greatest reward this year by far. On the cusp of my top10.

In Commonwealth countries, Remembrance Day is celebrated in honour of the end of the First World War.
War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!

Played this for Masters of War. Was also quickly reminded that both cats dislike early Bob Dylan. Harmonica sends them belly-running.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.

Their record from this year is more accurate of the times, but there is no questioning the passionate political resentment brewing in the instrumental builds here. The still image on the front cover is horrifying...knowing full well that inevitable destruction will follow.

Sturgill Simpson - The Ballad of Dood & Juanita

I thought of going a lot of ways today. At the end of the day, even though there will be a peaceful transfer of power, I don’t think in my lifetime that we’ve ever teetered as close to Civil War as we are right now. Yup, still in shock and processing.

Day 11: Remembrance Day

Going into 2025, like as it was in 1985… having blind faith in your leaders, or anyone, will get you killed.

That was my senior quote in my high school yearbook, the 9/30/85 LA Colosseum show where this was recorded was one of the first shows I went to.

I guess it needs to be revised now to "having blind faith in your leaders, or anyone, will get you killed. Or pardoned".

John Peel died 20 years ago this year. A tastemaker for several generations and famous for inviting artists on to his radio show to record a “Peel Session".
Play a Peel session or a record that somebody here hyped you to that you now absolutely love

The Smiths "Hatful of Hollow" (1984 Rough Trade; 2012 reissue)
Several of the tracks are credited as being "from the BBC Radio 1 John Peel Show". Not sure that means they're "Peel Sessions" per se, but they were definitely hyped on the John Peel show and I quite like the songs.
