November Challenge Thread: All-Stars Edition!

November 14
David Bowie
was released in UK on this date in 1969. The album is actual self titled, just like his first solo album from 1967, but later became known as Space Oddity when re-released in the early 70s

Play an album that is known by a different name than its actual title

Masters of Reality - S/T aka The Blue Garden

It seems @Yer Ol' Uncle D and I take turns every month using this one for various prompts.

Retro rocker Suzi Quatro first appears on retro tv show Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero (younger sister of the character Pinkie Tuscadero) in a 2 part story arc on Nov 8 and 15 1977.

Play an album that is closely associated with a tv show or who you discovered by its inclusion in a tv show soundtrack

TV on the Radio - Dear Science

"DLZ" soundtracks a memorable scene in Breaking Bad.

I was just getting into BBNG around the same time I was watching Better Call Saul, so Can't Leave the Night was on my TT and my TV within the same week. And I actually don't remember which came first.
I almost spun Michael Kiwanuka because a similar thing happened with BIg Little Lies/Cold Little Heart

Better Call Saul has even better music choices than Breaking Bad.

Day 15

So I don’t know who it is that does it in the first few seasons, but eventually, Carole King re-records “Where You Lead” for the opening credits of Gilmore Girls. She also plays the proprietor of the music shop in town. All kinds of musicians from Sebastian Bach to Grant Lee Phillips are in the cast.

Carol King - Tapestry

My copy is an old radio station white label promo and the gatefold was destroyed before I acquired it.

Day 9 - 6 degrees of separation

James Taylor - JT

Not the most interesting connection but one very relevant to my interests. At the 1978 Grammys Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” beat out this album for AOTY

Can’t believe this is the album I own for that connection when I prefer some of the other nominees way more than this

Very apropos to the artist directly above the post though, so extra special meta points?

We Built This City hits #1 in the Billboard charts today in 1985. This (Jefferson) Starship song is often called (by me at least) the worst #1 in history.

Play the worst you got.

I don't keep bad records, so I'll play what most folks consider the worst record by one of my faves.

A song from what is widely considered a Neil 'dog'...

Neil Young - Landing On Water

Tom Waits "Franks Wild Years" (1987 Island; 2023 reissue)
I had the same idea as @jamieanderson1968 for this prompt. Way Down In The Hole. Franks Wild Years is the first Tom Waits record I got into, sometime during the early 90's, so I knew the songs before The Wire aired. But this song has been forever associated with the show for me now. I'll go with the original version of the song, used as the theme of Season 2.

I was really hoping someone would play the other versions as well

In retrospect I have a hard time understanding how this version of "Birdland" won the Best Jazz Fusion Grammy. Or maybe not, given the title Jazz Fusion which was a very special time in the late 80s.

Anyway, I distinctly remember getting this record. During the pandemic when things were starting to open slowly, one of our locals (Vinyl Junkies Record Shack) would let a few people in at a time, but also put out stacks of free albums out front for passerbys, I picked it up out of memory of Birdland. Time has not served this album well.

I will disagree with @markmoriarty7388 of youtube, and state that the Manhattan Transfer does not kill it with their cover of Ella Fitzgeralds "Wacky Dust".

So I went a slightly different direction. This is an absolute scorcher of an album from Michigan's finest scuzz-rockers.
Laughing Hyenas - Hard Times (I Just Can't Win will shred your face)

But seeing them in the early 90s was probably one of the worst shows I had ever seen. This was in Vancouver and I think they were delayed at the border. They literally arrived and walked up on stage, spent all of 5 minutes setting up their equipment before tearing into their set that sounded like a jet taking off. You could't hear a bloody thing. John Bannon was pissed off about something/everything right from the start and was berating the crowd for showing up on a Thursday night "but since our commie country was so shitty, then we deserved a shitty show". He was spoiling for a fight with anyone and everyone. At the start of each song someone broke a guitar or bass string. The band spent much of their short set yelling at the sound guy (which in fairness did sound like absolute crap since he had no idea how to do live sound for a band like the Laughing Hyenas). The soundboard was set up very close to the side of the stage and I think after the fourth or fifth song, John put down his guitar and started to fight with the sound guy. A bouncer and Larissa separated them and band quickly packed up, called us "fucking idiots" and quickly got the hell out of town. Greatest (worst) show ever.

It’s better if you just imagine you’re listening to a Mario video game soundtrack
