November Challenge Thread: All-Stars Edition!

Day 4: Play an artist that you have traveled (or would travel to, given the opportunity) go see.

Tonic - Sugar

I won tickets to see Tonic open for Our Lady Peace and Collective Soul off some web contest about ten years ago. The show was a few hours away in another state. My wife (gf at the time) came with me and ended up running into a group of her friends at the stadium that she hadn't been able to see in a couple years. The tickets I won ended up being really good floor seats in, I think it was, the seventh row. The people sitting next to us left after Tonic because there was a bad weather advisory in the mountains. When they left the security folks let her friends come down and sit with us. It was a great a time, but fog and snow hit and it took us till then next morning to make it home because so many semis were getting stuck on the mountain pass.

Day 4: @waruv gave us the June 2022 challenge based on Taylor Swift. Mrs. ImTheOcean is traveling to Vancouver in December to see the last night of Taylors tour.

The Weeknd "Live At Sofi Stadium" (2024 XO)
I've been following The Weeknd since his House of Balloons mixtape but have never had a chance to see his show. With my daughter also being a fan, we're going to have to catch his show the next time he comes around our parts, Montreal or Toronto would be ideal, assuming there's no stop in Ottawa.

Since I don't have any Taylor to play for Mrs. ImTheOcean, gonna go with the first artist I traveled any significant distance to go see. Drove up from Riverside, Ca to Monterey, Ca / Laguna Seca Raceway to see the Dead on my 20th birthday (7/30/88) with a friend who just passed away a few weeks ago.

Got a speeding ticket in my crappy little honda and sold my first born for tickets since I left our tickets at home, but we had a fantastic weekend with lasting memories nonetheless. David Lindley & El Rayo~X and Los Lobos opened.

Bobby's outfit that day was probably not a look he could (or should) pull off today. I wonder if he has all those shorts somewhere in a vault?

Not my pic, but definitely brings back memories of the day.

I wasn't planning on participating this month, but I'm not seeing much of anything on my schedule other than Thanksgiving and a few concerts...one of which I will be unlikely to attend. So, here I am.

Day 1: When Needles & Grooves was first launched in May 2019, @RenegadeMonster got right into it with a spin challenge that started with the following prompt: "New Beginnings. Post an album that is associated with new beginnings".
  • New Beginnings. Post an album that is associated with new beginnings. Or, look back in your post history to see the first album you posted about on N&G, and play that album.

The inaugural N&G RotM entry, but not the first one I acquired. I don't participate in the threads much at all anymore, seeing as most are not to my taste. I am glad I have this one even if only through the symbolism from the prompt.

You should curate a pick!

Day 2: ranbalam and gafacaode both gave us Movie related themes in 2023.
  • Play a soundtrack or something featured in a movie.

Kenji Kawai (川井憲次) - Ghost in the Shell Original Soundtrack

An eerie, clairvoyant, atmospheric masterpiece of film. 90s anime was peak, and I don't think that level of cinematography will be attained relative to its era ever again.

Luna - Tell Me Do You Miss Me
Flew to Chicago (from Toronto) to see Luna play Penthouse. Bought this tour-only record (edition of 750) at the show. Seems like a good choice for today.

Drove from the Detroit area to Cleveland for the Hail to the Thief tour. We had orchestra pit tix, and by the encore I was almost to the stage. Definitely one of my top shows ever.

Day 4

I was gonna play the Dead, but since I was scooped there, I’ll save that story for another day.

In 2017, my wife and I celebrated our fourth anniversary in Richmond, Va. During the visit (actually the reason we chose that town, which we’ve come to love) we saw Béla Fleck and Chris Thile play a show as a duo. It was a great night at Maymont (and fantastic weekend.)

Father John Misty - Live at Third Man Records

He is the artist I’ve seen the most overall and in the most different states. The first time I saw him I had just gotten into him and I was obsessed so my brother and I drove up to NYC to see him play in Central Park. The third time I saw him was at Coachella and his inclusion on the lineup was a big reason why I wanted to go. Every other time was in Philly
