October 2020 Challenge Thread: Let’s Get Weird

Day 6: Major Label Debut

The Replacements "Tim" (1985 Sire; Rhino limited 2019 Rocktober pressing on magenta vinyl)

After "Let It Be", The Replacements moved from Twin/Tone to Sire. It may not have reached the heights of its predecessor, but "Tim" is a pretty damn good record that also managed to withstand the test of time.

Day 06: Major Label Debut

Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, M.A.A.d City (Top Dawg Entertainment, 2012 First European Pressing)

I keep meaning to play this for a while and this seems like a good opportunity. A fantastic record, perhaps my favourite of his, with a superb narrative. What a killer entrance to the world of major label releases.

Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview

Hope you don’t mind if I change the word “predominantly” to “prominently.” This was always the best album to put on and turn it up when my high school buddies and I had to close up the town McDonalds at night to mop up the greasy floors and clean the fry vats.

Fuck yeah!!! I’m of the minority that likes losing streak better but this is a phenomenal record.

Day 06: Major Label Debut
Spin an artist’s first album for a major recording label

Death Cab For Cutie - Plans

After the huge success of 2003's Transatlanticism, Death Cab For Cutie finally jumped ship to Atlantic Records for their major label debut Plans in 2005. Plans is a fantastic album and features some of my all time favorite Death Cab songs such as What Sarah Said, Soul Meets Body, I Will Follow You Into the Dark, and Brothers on a Hotel Bed.

Sonic Youth - Goo

It’s always interesting when a well loved indie band decides to take the plunge into the majors, with Sonic Youth, DGC might have softened the razor sharp edges just a pinch but it also helped them focus in on song creation. While Daydream Nation is rightfully they’re magnum opus, Goo is the SY album I’ve listened to the most.
