October 2020 Challenge Thread: Let’s Get Weird

Day 08: Paul Hogan’s Birthday - In honor of Australia’ National Treasure spin a record from the land down under.

From Allmusic.com:

"Following the January 1998 demise of their previous outfit, Australian schlock-rock legends the Hoodoo Gurus, singer/guitarist Dave Faulkner, guitarist Brad Shepherd, bassist Rick Grossmanand drummer Mark Kingsmill all reunited in the Persian Rugs. Despite a lineup mirroring the final incarnation of their previous outfit, the band insisted it was not just the Hoodoos under another name: drawing inspiration from garage combos both past and present, Faulkneronce remarked "The Hoodoo Gurus would cover a Persian Rugssong, but the Persian Rugs couldn't cover a Hoodoo Gurus song." In mid-2002 the group issued its debut EP Mr. Tripper; Grossmansoon exited, and ex-Crusaders/Thurston Howlers bassist Kendall James signed on to complete the full-length Turkish DeLight, issued early the following year."

A review from the Sydney Morning Herald:

"By the end of the Hoodoo Gurus, everything was getting too fraught and no fun, so Dave Faulkner had to pull the plug.

Turkish Delight is what it sounds like when there's no one stopping Faulkner, fellow Gurus guitarist Brad Shepherd and drummer Mark Kingsmill, and bass player Kendall James from having fun. It's trashy, noisy garage rock with foot-stomping, hair-shaking organ-and-guitar songs that recall the earliest version of the Gurus.

Faulkner's gift for melody is never far away, Shepherd's wild times are always amusing and anyone can shout along.

Fun, fun, fun, and then some more fun."

Crowded House - The Very Very Best of Crowded House

Really nice collection of songs from these fantastic songwriters. I worked at an old hotel in England years ago and one of the Australian employees there was a huge Crowded House fan and he showed me that they had so much more than “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” I can still smell that old rotting hotel whenever I put this on.

Day 08: Paul Hogan’s Birthday

I have this album and a EP from this band. I can't say I really know their music other than these releases, but I don't mind them.

How about my favorite album from the 80’s? IMO this is the definitive edition - 2 x LP 45RPM half-speed mastered at Abbey Road. Fantastic.

The Avalanches - The Album (Since I Left You promo version)

The Avalanches' debut has been one of my favorite albums for almost 20 years now, but I recently learned there's a promo version with one more song and some samples that had to be cut from the official release. Giving this version a first listen right now.

With all do respect to King Gizz and Gang of Youths, Rolling Blackouts C.F. are my favorite guitar band from Down Under over the past half decade. Jangly guitars are the easiest way to my heart and Rolling Blackouts have em in spades.

Sunny Side Up (Brownswood, 2019 Limited Coloured Pressing)

I have been meaning to spin this one for a while now, and it fits in with todays challenge quite nicely. This is a jazz compilation from Brownswood Records (Gilles Petersons' label) that focuses on the fresh talent in Melbourne, Australia. Its a similar set-up to their superb 'We Out Here' compilation, and the musicians here certainly gives the London crowd a run for their money!
