October 2020 Challenge Thread: Let’s Get Weird

Day 06: Major Favorite Label Debut
Spin an artist’s first album for a major favorite recording label

I was kind of stumped on this one, so instead of going with Zep I, Sabbath, etc I went with a JDs first for New West. Not exactly a major label but a label I really, really like,

Day 09: Soul Sister
Sister Rosetta Tharp died on this date 47 years ago. Spin something spiritual

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Sister Rosetta Tharpe

In 1957 Rosetta Tharpe moved to Philadelphia and in 2008, The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission approved the placement of a Historical Marker at her home. Turns out that's only about 1.5 miles from me, so on this beautiful first day of a four day weekend I took a walk. Up until 2009, Rosetta was buried in a North Philadelphia cemetery without a headstone. It took a benefit at a local venue to finally get something proper. That cemetery is fairly close to my office and I've been meaning to make the trek, but for today this will do.

It's a little rough, but it's spectacular..

Noob Noob - he gets it.

This is complete and total fire. It's as timely as it was 31 years ago.

Bonus SNL Neil...

Day 9 | Soul Sister
Calvary Wonders - Mighty Day
The Clarinets - Every Time I Feel The Spirit
The Gospel All Stars - Lonely Journey
Gospel Comforters - Jesus Will Help Me

I’m not a religious dude, but I love me some gospel funk & soul. I pulled out some 45s of Chicago gospel to spin today, and it’s reminded me that I need to rip some of these to digital. For now, here’s four sides that I found YouTube videos for.

It had been (and has been) years since I’ve stuck around to watch SNL late on a Saturday night, but this was my favorite record of that previous year and the performance did not disappoint.

Day 07: Long Live Media Mail
Spin the the most recent album delivered by your friendly postal carrier

While we were out of town our neighbor brought in ur mail and packages, so I returned to all three of these RSD releases on the kitchen table, not sure which came last.

So I'm spinning the one I'm most excited about.

Chris Smither - More from the Levee

Thanks to @Colonel_Angus for grabbing this one and sending it my way!

Live From New York...

Some “Song Memories”

If anybody comes across some great music related sketches while looking up SNL performances I invite you to post the video (or link to the video) here.

I have a few sketches queued up and will be posting em throughout the day. Lots of Paul Rudd.
