Day 13: Washington State of Mind
My adopted home state is a cornucopia of riches when it comes musical talent (Kenny G, anyone). Spin something that shows off Washington State’s evergreen music scene

Gonna post an artist that I feel no one else will.

Ask their peers and many will tell you they were the best band to come out of the scene.

A link to an outstanding documentary below that chronicles how a combination of lotsa bad luck and a couple poor decisions pretty much doomed them.

TAD - Salt Lick

Nirvana - Nirvana

I'm guessing Nirvana will be a popular one here so I'll go with the album I have that I'm guessing others might not consider posting. I learned a lot about Washington's music scene while looking into this. There were plenty of obvious names (all the grunge haha), but others I didn't know (Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Hendrix). Definitely a breeding ground for great music!

The Sonics - Here are the Sonics!!!

I was born and raised and worked in several music-related jobs in Washington State, so this one is tough to narrow down to just one. Although I spent the majority of my life in Seattle, I ended up deciding to narrow it down further to my hometown of Tacoma, which still includes a lot (including Bing Crosby!). This is an early, super beat-up pressing of this classic with lots of typos in the liner notes on the back, but it still sounds great to me.

Bonus: Neko Case is also from Tacoma, as she accurately portrays in this song:

The Sylvers - The Sylvers II

This was the first record I ever splurged on. It was a sealed original copy (no reissues yet then). I was pretty broke at the time, but it was totally worth it. This album is so good. Tough to beat the one-two punch at the beginning of the album “We Can Make It If You Try” and “Through The Love Of My Heart”. There’s also the huge sample on the B-side that Pete Rock used for Ghostface’s “Be Easy”. LITA reissued this a couple of years ago - and I think it’s still readily available.

Day 13 | Washington State of Mind
Jake One - White Van Music

Jake One’s probably one of the more underrated producers and definitely one of my favorites. He’s done beats for so many different rappers from G-Unit to De La Soul to Snoop to Chance to Wale. His work with Freeway is some of his best. His part of the beat on Drake’s “The Furthest Thing” after the beat switch with that sped-up gospel sample is amazing.

This is his one and only producer album from 2008 with a whole bunch of guest rappers. So many good tracks on this, but I’ll link the Seattle homage closer on the album “Home”.

Day 12: Black & White

I sent a copy to @Selaws for secret santa last year - but picked this up again when Mofi had it back up for sale.
