October 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread: Let's Get Lexical, Lexical

Day 04. Maunder - (v.) to talk in a rambling manner

Lou Reed - Street Hastle

The epic title track from another under appreciated gem, is chest hair shy of 11 minutes in length. The lengthy track, which also features an up and coming musician from New Jersey singing back up; allows Reed to maunder on, painting a vivid picture life on the grimy edges.

Day 5. Desiderium - (n.) an ardent desire or longing, especially a feeling of grief for something lost

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy - I See A Darkness

It’s tough to pinpoint specifically what is causing the desideratum this album evokes as it’s lyrically a bit opaque. All that is certain is Oldham is singing of great loss throughout this record; the weariness of his voices only adds to the mournful tone.

"Wild Turkey," in particular, comes to mind for today.

Late at night, when I feel alone
I cry in darkness and scream into the unknown
'Cause she's never coming back
No, she's never coming back

Body in water for days and days
Hopes for a safe return, my hope's in vain
'Cause she's never coming back
No, she's never coming back

When I was seventeen, I pretended not to care
Stayed numb for years to escape despair
When your soul dies, you just can't hide it
Everyone can tell
Oh, Lord, will I ever feel right again?

Tried so hard to be an automaton
Body of steel and wire circuits for my backbone
'Cause she's never coming back
No, she's never coming back

Wild turkey in the car seat
The bottle's empty, I hope it gave her some relief
'Cause she's never coming back
No, she's never coming back

I probably could have grabbed any of their albums off the shelf because I get this feeling from every Sigur Ros album at some point. But this one just showed up and I wanted to spin it. Listening to this has sent me back down the rabbit hole of watching their brilliant videos, which complement the songs so well in capturing those feelings of nostalgia and loss.

Mark Kozelek with Petra Haden - Joey Always Smiled

This guy’s stuff after 2012 is the definition of “maunder.” This is the most tolerable album he’s put out since then and I only got it because I like Petra Haden a lot. But still… ugh.

5. Desiderium - (n.) an ardent desire or longing, especially a feeling of grief for something lost

Johnny Cash "American IV" (2002 American Recordings; 2014 reissue)
Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" was the first thing that came to mind. The song is about heroin addiction and depression, so ardent desire and longing, in the form of a feeling of grief for something lost.

Day 06. Chthonic - (adj.) concerning, belonging to, or inhabiting the underworld

Aesop Rock - Spirit World Field Guide

70764642-79B2-402F-AED3-0D944270E89A.jpeg
The concept behind Aes’ most recent album was similar to a Tobin’s Spirit Guide or Handbook For The Recently Deceased in album form. A “how to” guide to help listeners through any chthonic journey that awaits them.
