In the race for (commercial) outer space, Matador is in first place. We just can’t get our CEO back — he’s been up there for ages (#marooned, moron’d, etc.). But to celebrate this pending tragedy, we’re putting anything and everything (save for Snail Mail’s ‘Valentine’ and any preorders) onsale for 25% off now through December 1.

Some people laughed when our guy said he was opening a pressing plant on the surface of Mars, but with the entire industry backed up, who’s laughing now? Well, he’s laughing for sure, but not in a good way.

PSA about how uDiscover awards points on purchases. I had trouble using my 40% off VIP coupon and initiated an exchange with CS last Monday. They didn't offer any help for that particular issue, but I sent them a note saying the ticket was moot because once the Veterans' Day Sale ended, I was able to use my coupon. Having already started an exchange, I took the opportunity to ask why I had only received about 600 points on a $163 order (that's the total amount I paid after discounts). I had gold status and was supposed to earn 7 points per dollar. I had never paid any attention to how points were awarded before, but this time I was factoring points into the total discount. CS told me that even though on my receipt, shipping is free, their system identified $67.99 of my total charge as shipping and $9.27 as taxes. So I was only earning points on the "rewardable amount" of $86.12 (7 * $86 = 602 pts).

If you're like me and using the points you think you're going to earn with a purchase to calculate your total discount, you should probably take that into consideration. UDiscover still has some great deals (though their CS is still a hassle to deal with and slow to respond), but I couldn't find details about how they reward points anywhere on their site.

Mexican Summer holiday sale!!!:
Our annual Holiday Sale starts now and runs through 12/10. We've got 15-20% discounts on select music, books, and merchandise. We'll be donating 50% of all proceeds from the sale to UPROSE, Brooklyn's oldest Latino community-based organization. An intergenerational, multi-racial, nationally recognized community organization, UPROSE promotes sustainability and resiliency in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood.

The Grateful Dead Records Collection Box (Wake of the Flood, From the Mars Hotel, Blues for Allah, and Steal Your Face) is only $84 at Target right now - down from a regular price of $110 back in Feb when I ordered it on the 3 for 2 deal (and got it for $77).

So it should only be about $60 after sales tax when the 3 for 2 deal starts again on 11/21.

this was discussed elsewhere (I think the grateful thread or maybe the vmp anthology thread?) but these are the recent-ish rhino reissues and all sound fantastic. Not like, MOFI amazing, but still really great. totally worth it unless you demand 45rpm mofi goodness.

I used the cancellation trick last week to order a few criterion blurays. The annoying thing though, is that they don’t subtract the sales tax amount when you do that - so even if you cancel two items, you’ll pay 3x sales tax for the third one.

Thanks for pointing that out. Assuming you are correct, then the cancellation trick is not as exciting as it sounds for big-ticket items (at least not if you live in a state with a high sales tax).

By my calculations, if I were to order 3 Bowie boxes, I’d have to pay about $65 in sales tax. A single box would come down to $240, but the triple sales tax brings it over $300, which is not much less than what I could get the box for through PBC.
