Let's broadly overgeneralize an entire population of people, as if that's ever an accurate statement.

People grow up being exposed to certain things and as hard as it is to believe, can overlook what others deem "common knowledge". And I'll use my favorite experience to prove that point, I've mentioned this before in various threads, but I have a friend who actually said this to me

"Wait, Paul McCartney was with a band before Wings?" I kid you not , music is so vast it's hard to hear and experience everything. Hell, I'm going to be 55 and still, thanks to this community, come across artists I've never heard of that have been around for quite a while..............it's part of the fun and learning process ;)

PS. I could tell you nothing about 90's Hip Hop, it was never my thing.

i can only speak of my experiences of my music convos with gen z mostly online comments/watching videos on YT and a significant percent of them have some kind of condescending attitude towards older music.of course i know this does not pertain to every person of gen z.

what i'm speaking of is not what should be "common knowledge" but a significant percent of gen z having some kind of condescending attitude towards older music and having a unwillingness to have that music journey of discovering music of the past.as i mentioned above i know this doesn't pertain to all people of gen z,it just seems like a hive mentality that is popular among their generation.

What generation of kids could you not have applied this stereotype to?

Yeah, this is my thought. The oldest people born in the '00s or later are 19. The ones you're going to encounter in comments sections are probably most likely to be complaining (like any comments section, haha). I don't think it's fair to characterize the generation while they are still largely minors and by the most vocal in YT comments, etc.

it's also just normal and healthy to rebel against the former generations when you're young. It's actually why a lot of great music was created.

Absolutely. My parents were kind of shocked that I was so open to their music (and fashion). And mildly horrified by my embracing of their parents' music (and fashion) when I was a teenager. It's super normal for young people to not want to be associated with "old" stuff.

i know this can be applied to about most generations but like mentioned this seems like a popular hive mentality with gen z.with past generations as a whole we didn't write of past generations music of as a whole even if we didn't like it we respected and acknowledged our "new cool music" wouldn't be possible if not for music of past generations and we also held a high respect for the pioneers.this is the difference i see with the younger people of today and young people of generations of the past.

It was a hive mentality with every generation as long as more than one genre of music was being recorded and especially since the onset of rock n roll.

Every generation has written off the old music. The only not common denominator is the Gen Z forward have had social media to announce their platform to everyone.

Itā€™s best to keep in mind that your experience is indeed your experience.

i have mentioned this is my experience and for the Rock N Roll musicians they showed a high respect for the pioneers who came before them.these are my views and opinions i thought it was pretty obvious,i'm in no way saying everyone has to agree with it.

I remember high school in the 90s and I knew friends that were appalled at how much ā€œoldā€ music I listened to. Beatles was acceptable, as well as some other well regarded classic rock artists, but to intentionally put on the 50s/60s radio station? That was not so common for kids my age. Music people, yes... average listeners, no.
