Day 18
Prettiest Star - Marc Bolan played guitar on the earliest version of this Bowie song in 1970.
Play a song with a “guest” on it

Phoebe Bridgers contributes additional vocals on Adderall. From the unplayed stack, the backlog is considerable.

Shame - Food for Worms

Edit: Maybe I should play something else, you can't really hear her voice in the mix, if it wasn't for the credits I'd never know she's there...

Edit 2: shame is an underrated band, 3 great albums.

U2 - Zooropa
Song: “The Wanderer”

Johnny Cash takes the lead vocals for the entire song. I always thought this was such a fantastic track to end the album

More like "guests". U2 brought on The New Voices of Freedom choir to sing "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"at one of their MSG Joshua Tree shows (immortalized in the film Rattle & Hum). Do I get bonus points since I was at this show???

Day 12
Kabbalah - David (in)famously dabbled in the occult in the 70s (don’t do drugs kids).
Play something mystical or related to the occult

Sigur Rós - ÁTTA

OK, so maybe Sigur Rós is mystical, but I'm picking this one because I had a roommate in college that didn't like it when I listened to this band (this would have been around the time Takk came out) because he thought their music sounded "satanic." Yes it was a religious school, but I always thought they were more like angelic aliens...

Day 19
Quicksand from Hunky Dory has more ideas crammed into the song than a first year university intro to philosophy course.
Play something deep

Semisonic - Feeling Strangely Fine
IMG_5935.jpeg
This album was written while lead singer Dan Wilson was preparing to become a father. “Closing Time” is partly about this. Their first child was born three months premature and required an extensive hospital stay after she was born and the band recorded the record during that time.

Every track on this album is seriously deep. Conor Oberst - Ruminations

Barbary Coast (Later)
'Cause the modern world
Is a sight to see
It's a stimulant
It's pornography
It takes all my will
Not to turn it off

Day 15
Nadsat. A fictional slang language Anthony Burgess created for his novel A Clockwork Orange. Bowie made use of these words throughout his career, especially in Girl Loves Me
Play something with made up or unintelligible lyrics or vocals

At the Drive-In - Vaya

The track 300 MHz has a section of creepy backwards vocals.

Day 16
June 16, 1962 - David Jones’ first live performance, playing saxophone with the Konrads
Play a “first”

Camera Obscura - Underachievers Please Try Harder

This arrived this week, and I didn't realize that the record label was in Spain, so it was my first time that I'd had a vinyl purchase come from España.

Martha Wainwright – Come Home To Mama
20230619_214105.jpg

Martha Wainwright's soaring yet delicate harmonies take center stage in her performance of elegy "Proserpina," written by her late mother, the legendary folk singer Kate McGarrigle, in filmmaker Matthu Placek's intimate video. Taken from her forthcoming album Come Home to Mama, the track was recorded in Sean Lennon's New York home studio and continues a lifelong musical dialogue between Wainwright and McGarrigle, who passed away in 2010. "It's the last song my mother wrote, and of course I also think that she wrote it for me, and for Rufus," explains Wainwright, referring to her critically acclaimed crooner brother, Rufus Wainwright. "We wrote songs together, ever since we were children. As we sing her songs, I think her voice can be heard in ours, literally through our pipes." Placek's single-take film was inspired by the premise of "Proserpina," which recounts the story of the creation of the seasons by the Roman goddess Ceres, who withholds the world's bounty for six months every year in protest about her daughter's abduction by Pluto, lord of the underworld. "It's all about Martha's performance," says the director, who has also produced music videos for Trixie Whitley and Hannah Cohen. "Martha's vocal range is insane, it's outrageous—I've never seen anyone like her."

Day 17
Oh! You Pretty Things had its first live performance at Glastonbury Fayre on June 23 1971.
Play something “live”

Guided By Voices - Live from Austin, TX
View attachment 175596
This is my first time listening to this show. I held off for a long time because I was worried it would plunge me into a Guided By Voices rabbit hole again, and it's definitely awakening that itch again after many years. No surprise for me, but I did love seeing them live far more than any album. This show brings back some amazing memories of the one time I got to catch them many moons ago.
