Party up moodge, it’s the June 2023 Vinyl Challenge!!

Day 15
Nadsat. A fictional slang language Anthony Burgess created for his novel A Clockwork Orange. Bowie made use of these words throughout his career, especially in Girl Loves Me
Play something with made up or unintelligible lyrics or vocals

Not quite what the prompt asked for, but fitting either way and a good reason to spin this.

Day 16
June 16, 1962 - David Jones’ first live performance, playing saxophone with the Konrads
Play a “first”

Picking something from my unplayed stack.
SRV's debut. This VMP issue sounds freaking amazing.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Texas Flood

I saw SRV only once... as support act for Huey Lewis! Such a strange pairing, but I am so thankful that I saw him.

Day 13
Laughing Gnome
Play the worst song by your favourite artist
1000004286.jpgThe National "Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers" - I happen to enjoy Sugar Wife, it's a fine song that gets a lot of hate for some reason! Look the first two albums are inconsistent and I love them for that...I could have played the new record, which I like but have issues with a few songs off that!!!

Gordon Downie – Coke Machine Glow: Songwriters' Cabal (20th Anniversary Edition)
20230616_191002.jpg

First solo outing from The Tragically Hip frontman and national treasure of the hinterlands, Gord Downie.
22 years ago a 21-year-old (then) non-Tragically Hip-liking me picked up the CD/book combo special edition at cost ($12-ish) from my job at HMV. Despite not being a fan of The Hip, I loved this quirky collection - especially "Nothing But Heartache In Your Social Life," which also provided the title to my good friend's unfinished first feature film attempt (Falling Off The Map) a couple of years later.

Day 14
Mime - Bowie was hired to go on tour with T-Rex as their opening act. As a mime.
Play a not so great career choice

The Firm was just ok, and Outrider qualifies as not so great. But the bigger issue I had was the tour for this album. Page was a sweating, drooling, uninspiring mess of a performer.
All that being said, I'd really love a late career album from him.

Sun Kil Moon - Benji

IMG_5913.jpeg

This was his last great album, where he started to show just a little of that oversharing and speak-singing but wasn’t yet obnoxious. He went all in with that stuff after this. Being a total a-hole has also not been a great career choice.

Day 16
June 16, 1962 - David Jones’ first live performance, playing saxophone with the Konrads
Play a “first”

The first Galactic album, the first album that I got from Tipitina's that convinced me this was going to be a special kind of club, and the first album most people I know got exposed to Bayou Funk out in Colorado. They put on some killer shows out there back in the late 90s/early 00s. Would love to see them again.

Day 10
Isolar I and II were the names of the StationToStation and Stage tours. It also is an anagram of sailor, which was Bowie’s screen name on BowieNet.
Play a puzzle.

J Dilla - Donuts

Sampling is like taking pieces from different puzzles and putting them together to make a new image, and J Dilla was undeniably one of the masters. (I'm reusing an older photo, which includes the excellent J Dilla biography.)
