Political Discussion

I remember when I was growing up and saw news coverage of the NRA and car bombings and the violence in the Gaza Strip, etc and thinking to myself I can't imagine what it is like to just be going about your day and then being in the middle of such violence. Just going to the grocery store and a bomb explodes. Just walking your kid to school and a shooting happens. Just trying to do the most mundane things and not being able to without fear of injury or death. And I remember thinking I was so glad I lived in the United States where I was safe to go about my day and I was so sorry others were unable to experience a sense of safety in their lives.

Well, other children in other countries are watching the news today/tonight and thinking how lucky they are they don't live in the United States now, aren't they? Other children in other countries are so sorry that we are unable to just go about our lives without being senselessly injured or murdered.

:(

Good guys with guns follow the rules which make sure no good guys with guns will be found in exactly the places the mass shooters keep appearing. Coincidence?

Yes but in areas where gun regulations are strict and consistent across borders gun deaths over all drop remarkably. The argument you pose is too situational and as a result is backed up with data.

A Look at the Numbers
"The top-line numbers suggest a correlation that, on further investigation, grows only clearer.

Americans make up about 4.4 percent of the global population but own 42 percent of the world’s guns. From 1966 to 2012, 31 percent of the gunmen in mass shootings worldwide were American, according to a 2015 study by Adam Lankford, a professor at the University of Alabama.

Adjusted for population, only Yemen has a higher rate of mass shootings among countries with more than 10 million people — a distinction Mr. Lankford urged to avoid outliers. Yemen has the world’s second-highest rate of gun ownership after the United States."

Exactly. The gun debate ended when we as a nation decided that the murder of small children wasn't enough to wake us the fuck up.

I disagree. It did wake people up. The majority of Americans do want change.

The issue is the money and power behind the NRA.

What we need to change is special interest and money controlling our government. Policies are set by what money buys, not what is best for the vast majority of Americans.

And people are still buying guns. And arguing that more guns in the hands of good guys would end this.

You and I agree. We're not the ones that need to wake up. The ones that think sandy hook was a conspiracy or whatever it is they tell themselves to feel better about buying their guns are the ones I'm referring to. They're the ones that have decided the continuous murder of innocent people isn't as important at their right to own guns.

I thought they were struggling financially?

Oh, there finances are strong.

The reason why this is coming up is because for the first time ever, in the 2018 election cycle, the NRA was outspent by gun control groups.

But the GOP are still in Bed with the NRA and taking their money, so it's no real concern to them yet that more money is was spent by gun control groups last election cycle.

Man, rich people have weird priorities. Maybe do away with that entertainment budget?

Not surprised by any of that either. Corruption at its best. Pad the pockets of the wealthy with even more money and perks while slashing costs and salaries for the average working.

Dayton police officers responded and ended the shooting in less than a minute and 9 people still died.

Less than a minute.

9 people.

The good guys with guns theory is not enough.

Also, to all of those screaming about mental health (not directed at you, @debianlinux ):

The position of your party is invalid.

You've made quite a huge and erroneous leap if you think Trump is somehow "my party". I am completely disenfranchised and have no "party" to speak of. I could be compelled towards something more centrist than the leftiest of the left or the rightiest of the right which is all I've been offered for some time.
