Teddy Roosevelt attempted to do this too. He stepped down an the election went to his successor Taft but Roosevelt soured on Taft and then ran as part of the Bull Moose party but was unsuccessful. Fun Fact about Taft: after serving as President he then served as a the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
 
Garfield was also assassinated and though the wound itself likely wasn’t fatal the doctors digging around in the wound trying to heal him likely caused the infection that later killed him.

Also, it's not so clear cut that Garfield the cat was named after Garfield the President.

The cat is named after Davis's grandfather, James Garfield Davis (who was probably named after former U.S. President James Garfield). It debuted in 1978 in 41 US newspapers.

But remember, those rules can always be amended if any particular party gains the trifecta. I’m actually surprised Trump didn’t try and do this during his term in office. If he gets a second term, he may well try and push this through.

Taking a page right out of Putin’s playbook who basically just created a new executive position, gave it extreme amounts of power, and placed himself in it forever and ever.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ security detail has cost taxpayers more than $24 million over the past four years and is projected to cost another $3 million through mid-February, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service told POLITICO on Tuesday.

That level of security detail is highly unusual. The past four education secretaries have been protected by the Education Department’s own small security force.

“No other cabinet secretaries during the Trump administration has or had this agreement with the USMS,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.
