Political Discussion

From my basketball forum which is left leaning:

Poster 1:
"In addition to complaining about Trump (which is and will be appropriate), the dems need to take a hard look in the mirror and figure why they lost and how to fix it?

Trump has much of the working class in his camp (including unions). He made massive inroads with young voters, especially men (including college educated men, black men and hispanic men). He has converted many traditional hard to get voters to his movement. It is too simple to state that all of this is due to racism and misogyny. I had a friend tell me for the last 6 months that the immigration issue doesn’t matter. He was wrong. The republicans adjusted and bent the knee to Trump, now the dems have to make an adjustment because their traditional playbook is not going to work.

To me, this is akin to the demographic switch the democrats took in the 60’s by shifting away from the dixiecrats. The republicans are not republicans anymore, they are maga populists. The democrats need to have a change of course as well. Figure something out quick because Vance is much smarter than Trump and will be funded by deep, deep pockets come 2028".

Poster 2:
"Good thoughts. I think a lot of it was just baked into how things went coming out of the pandemic and the fact that most people don’t know what things a president actually controls. If HRC had won in 16 we probably have Donny in 2020 and dems win this one because they blame him for the economy. People want cheap shit seemed to be the bottom line."

Poster 1:
"They actually want jobs, opportunity and the ability to buy a car and/or a house…without, necessarily, going to college. Trump was actually correct in 2016 when he railed against NAFTA and similar bills, which killed US manufacturing. The dems (i.e. Clinton) biggest mistake was passing that republican conceived and drafted bill. Now, Trump did nothing to fix it…but his movement doesn’t care.

I knew when I found out my two nephews were voting for Trump, the dems were in big trouble. Both are extremely smart (full ride college scholarships, nearly perfect SATs) and have always been liberal. Both started to drink the MAGA cool-aid this past summer because of inflation and the very expensive housing market. Neither think they will ever be able to afford to buy a house. Both love Musk and trust him. Both think Crypto is the future. They live in AZ, so are sensitive to immigration. Both did not like that Harris was given the nomination. They have both gone down the rabbit hole."

Sounds like poster 1’s nephews are a couple of assholes. I hope they get fucked.

Im super relieved Baldwin is keeping her seat
This means that either:
  • Some Wisconsinites voted for Baldwin + Trump, which is absolutely insane to think about, or
  • Enough Baldwin voters avoided Kamala due to pro-Israel support that it cost her the state - obviously "punishing her" in this way has grave consequences, but also the signs were there all along and clearly ignored (just like Michigan)

Option 1 is very likely. I was listening to an interview with her back in September and she was saying that a lot of her supporters are also Trump supporters

It’s wild but this is where we are as a country.

It’s so weird that I felt a weird sense of relief that all this worry over the election is over. All the effects of what this presidency will bring will still hit like a mf'er but I think I've entered the acceptance phase and now I'm extremely apathetic.
Yeah, I am slowly getting there. I can’t really listen to music right now though unfortunately. The joy is gone but I once I am finished venting I am probably gonna ignore this thread and not look back.

I will still vote in every election like I always do but I don’t think I ever expected my vote to matter to the greater good again.

I started blaring songs out the kitchen slider

My stupid neighbors did get to hear Rootless Tree, by Damien Rice (chorus lyrics are:

So fuck you, fuck you, fuck you
And all we've been through
I said leave it, leave it, leave it
It's nothing to you
And if you hate me, hate me, hate me
Then hate me so good that you can let me out, let me out
Let me out of this hell when you're around)

Followed by The Old 97's, "I don't wanna die in this town"

Then RATM - Take the power back

But husband was trying to work so I had to turn it down
