Political Discussion

When friends and family post things like this I have to really wonder if I was in an alternate universe the last 4 years.

That's better than some. Last night I was texting to comfort my sister because our one Trump-fan brother started lashing out online. I don't have social media, so I haven't seen the posts, but she wrote about how she has nothing against conservatives or Republicans, but that as someone with a black husband and black children, she was relieved about the election outcome, and that the last four years have been hard for them and often frightening (they live in a strongly red western state). Our brother flipped out, started talking about how anti-racist Trump is and if she has any fears for her husband or children in America it is clearly because she is watching the wrong news, because to think black people have anything to worry about in Trump's America is absolutely ridiculous.

I told her that he's hurt and scared right now, and lashing out about it, and that it's probably best just to ignore/block him for a little while...

“The real problem, said Ocasio-Cortez, was that the party lacked “core competencies” to run campaigns.

“There’s a reason Barack Obama built an entire national campaign apparatus outside of the Democratic National Committee,” she told the Times’ Astead Herndon. “And there’s a reason that when he didn’t activate or continue that, we lost House majorities. Because the party – in and of itself – does not have the core competencies, and no amount of money is going to fix that.

The failure of the party to operate an online strategy “in a real way that exhibits competence”, Ocasio-Cortez told the Times, made it hypocritical for the party to advance criticism of progressive messaging.

“If I lost my election, and I went out and I said: ‘This is moderates’ fault. This is because you didn’t let us have a floor vote on Medicare for all.’ And they opened the hood on my campaign, and they found that I only spent $5,000 on TV ads the week before the election?” Ocasio-Cortez said. “They would laugh. And that’s what they look like right now trying to blame the Movement for Black Lives for their loss.”

Grassroots activism that produced large turnout in Detroit, Philadelphia and Georgia was crucial to Biden’s win, and if the Democratic party fails to recognise that and incorporate the grassroots, the party disintegrates at the ballot box, Ocasio-Cortez said.

“It’s really hard for us to turn out nonvoters when they feel like nothing changes for them. When they feel like people don’t see them, or even acknowledge their turnout,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“If the party believes after 94% of Detroit went to Biden, after Black organisers just doubled and tripled turnout down in Georgia, after so many people organised Philadelphia, the signal from the Democratic party is the John Kasich won us this election? I mean, I can’t even describe how dangerous that is.”

It really pains me to read that they told Progressives now is not the time time for progressive policies. This will not help us defeat Trump. Place a hold on progressive policies until after the election.

Also, with them blacklisting firms that help progressives run their campaigns and get to the top and all the speculation about whether or not AOCs congressional district will be dropped because of the census leads me to believe things might not be much easier for progressives during the next term either.

I fear we need to wait until the old garbage is taken out and we get new younger faces replacing the current generation of senior democrats.

I find it astounding how shockingly easy it is to brainwash some people. And I mean like, Trumps not even good at it.

Me must be watching FOX News to get his sense of reality.

Like I said earlier today. They still won't call Joe Biden "President Elect" because of the pending litigation. They are spinning it off like Trump has a very good chance of winning.
I don't defend Fox News often...bit their website has a big banner that says President Elect Joe Biden". Now individual commentators on the network...that might be a different story.

That might be new since this morning. They made the news on the other networks for telling them commentators not to use that term.

I saw it last night too because I was specifically interested in how they were handling it. Again, their on air personalities might be a different story. I don't have the stomach to watch and find out though.

Tonight my wife and I were talking about how to handle the holidays, navigating the fact that we’re already restricted from visiting with out-of-state family and it’s only going to get worse from here, and it occurred to me: at some point over the next month and a half, Donald Trump will definitely say or tweet something to the effect of “it sucks that you can’t get together with your family for Thanksgiving/Christmas; this never would have happened if I were President.”

........followed by "I'll just have to keep the vaccine to myself" ;)

And he'll say it while he's still president, but people will already blame Biden for it.

I mean... there is a HUGE silver lining to him attacking our entire election system and democracy.... WHEN he loses all these lawsuits it’s going to completely suck the air out of his base and they won’t trust the system enough to bother voting in 2022. I think Lindsey is right, if they don’t somehow successfully turn our entire democracy upside down then there won’t be another Republican president in a VERY long time.

The trillion dollar question is: will they bother voting in January 2021?

The combination of the cabinet that got floated by Politico (no progressives, a guy with ties to fossil fuels as Energy) and the reports that he plans to join some form of the TPP, already have me livid at Biden.
