Political Discussion

Yesterday there was an Apple News+ story and podcast about how many corporations are ditching Silicon Valley for Texas or Florida. Elon Musk and Tesla being the latest to announce that they are moving their corporate head courters to Austin Texas.

There are three main contributing factors driving companies out of California.

First off is both Texas and Florida have no income tax. This means that CEO's and other executives can bank a lot more profit as they don't have to pay state income tax, and California has one of the highest income taxes in the nation.

Secondly is the cost of real estate is sone of the highest in the nation in Silicon Valley. Corporations can save a lot of money by getting cheap real estate in states like Texas or Florida.

Lastly, COVID-19. Many corporations are unhappy with California's "draconian" COVID-19 restrictions. Elon Musk in particular who has been publicly against Californias restrictions has made this one of the top reasons to move Tesla to Texas. In addition, when it comes to the tech industry, COVID-19 brought working remotely, and post COVID many companies are keeping these policies. So that means they don't need to be in a tech hub to get talent. The majority of their work force can work remotely from where ever they live. So again, this means they don't need such a large corporate office or be located in the expensive tech hub that is Silicon Valley. So covid has helped accelerate the second reason listed.

they have been saying this for ages, but CA economy has kept growing and so has the population.

Musk is a douche - sucking the government teat to the tune of 5 billion dollars in taxpayer funding.

For someone who decries government, he sure takes advantage of it when it comes to free money.

Corporate welfare queen, like the worst of them.

Interesting. Looks like we still have some GOP members with morals

I mean, he's retiring so it was a low(er) risk decision.

Not buying it. All the other stuff from the last 4 years was apparently okay.

While Bezos has been the biggest beneficiary of the pandemic in terms of largest net worth increase, Musk saw the highest percentage gains with a 228% boost, taking his personal fortune from $24.6 billion pre-pandemic to $73.1 billion as of August 13, according to IPS.

Musk's wealth climbed another $8 billion Monday as Tesla stock soared to an all-time high, making him the fourth wealthiest person in the world.

I wonder if any of his companies' profitability might come partially from publicly funded subsidies and all the taxes he's not paying....hmmmmmm

In the last couple years didn't Bezos also provide assistance for employees with applying for programs like Food Stamps and encouraging them to do so rather than increases wages to livable wages?

Uh uh, Lindsey Graham says there's still a "narrow" path to victory 🤭🤭😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well, that path now requires someone in both the senate in the house to request a vote to invalidate / no accept the electoral colleges results.

With the democrats in control of the house that path is incredibly narrow to get this vote to pass 🤣

The vote would have to pass in both the house and senate.

Capitalism at its best. Further wage inequality.

Move business where the largest tax breaks can be found and the cost of labor and benefits is cheaper. Executives and shareholders make bank while the workers are no better off at best.
This isn't capitalism. This isn't what Adam Smith envisioned with his invisible hand. In fact, both Marx and Smith were huge critics of financiers and the rentier class--those people that generated their income passively through owning a resource that they rent out whether it be in monthly rent or through loan interest. Both warned against giving the financiers power to shape the economy because of the very issues we are dealing with right now.

Oh, it gets better than that:
According to the New Food Economy, Amazon ranks high on the list of employers with massive numbers of employees enrolled in SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as food stamps). In Ohio, around one in 10 Amazon employees uses SNAP; in Pennsylvania, about one in nine. In Arizona, nearly one in three Amazon employees is enrolled in the food stamp program.

Later this year, Amazon will start accepting food stamps for online grocery orders, from which it stands to benefit enormously as one of the nation’s top retailers. That means the company will be the recipient of government assistance (in the form of tax breaks and incentives) while its own workers are forced to rely upon that same program to survive.

So Amazon workers are on food stamps and Amazon accepts food stamps so he not only doesn't pay his workers a living wage, but also rakes in government dollars by accepting the very food stamps that his workers rely on.
