Political Discussion

Some of you may know I am big AOC stan. Rarely do we see a highly intelligent, compassionate, grass roots political activist make such a profound impact on our governmental systems. Add to that fact her strategic and prolific use of social media outlets and you have a person who can speak to the current generations effectively and meet them where they live/hang/etc. She’s a dynamo.

If you have a spare hour, watch this video. It is a masterclass on empathy, contextual communication, and effectiveness in messaging. She presents the concepts and realities of current political situations in a completely accessible way. I love it.

I’ll have to watch this. I like her and Katie Porter.

Sighs, this whole article is about how Jill Biden should drop the "Dr." before her name. It's basically you are not a real doctor, you are a PhD argument. And using the "Dr." title is fraudulent according to the author who points out Mrs. Biden has a Ed.D., a doctor of education. She is not a doctor of medicine.

I know it's different in most places, but interestingly, I'm not allowed to use the Dr title here. It's legally reserved for the medical professionals. And only M.D.'s can use it without further qualifiers. For example, my wife is an optometrist and can use the Dr title but she must put O.D. at the end of her name. Dentists have to do that to.

........and yet, "DR" Atlas became our infectious disease "Expert"

In the end, it's a decision for a society. The insidiousness here is that they're targeting an individual and asking that individual to renounce the use of the title when it's a perfectly acceptable thing in that society. If they're unhappy with the way it's used, it should be addressed across the board and be the same for all Ph.D.'s, not just her. I find that pretty disgusting about the article.

I'm pretty sure it's different here. Having a doctorate of something is enough to use the Title. When it comes to education, growing up I saw "Dr." used a lot.

I don't remember what degree they had, but in middle school / high school both the principal and librarian had a doctorate of something (The school was grades 7-12). They both went by "Dr." as part of their title. We are taught by our teachers that was the proper way to address them.

Again, in college most all my professions went by Dr. something or another if they had a PhD.

Outside of education, you tended to see people use their degree(s) as their title, rather than Doctor unless they were a doctor of medicine.

I think it's only like that in Quebec here. If I'm not mistaken, Ph.D's can use the Dr. title in the rest of Canada. I can sign my name with Ph.D. as a suffix but I can't use Dr (I could actually be fined depending on how I represent myself).

Around here Dr. Is the official title for anyone to use with a successful dissertation regardless of the profession, but frankly medicinal Dr titles are universally frowned upon in the academic world because a run-of the-mill medicinal dissertation is hardly equivalent to bachelor thesis in other fields

The thing that does annoy me, though, is when people who have a doctorate use it to try to sound authoritative on something outside their expertise. The way I see it, all expertise is domain-specific.

It's funny you bring this up. My daughter just had a substitute teacher for 6 weeks, in grade 6 no less, that kept mentioning his Ph.D. We have no idea in what. But even my daughter could tell it was dubious and understands that it has no bearings on his abilities to teach (she said he was one of the worst teachers she's had so far, LOL).

Not conceding and calling " voter fraud" seems to be the thing in the gop in 2020
I'm hoping karma bites the Republicans big time in the ass.

So part of this could be an over reaction on my part, but being questioned on your credentials because of your sex is something that a lot of women still deal with, especially women in technical roles. There are still a lot of stereotypes regarding women's mental capacity and when a woman earns a doctorate in some degree field that men see as "less"--and yes, many men see teaching as an "easy" degree to get and an "easy" job to do. This is a common view point for many people with more conservative values. It's just another way the world tells me that in order to get half the respect of a man in my field, I have to work twice as hard. And God forbid I show any emotion....ever...because that just proves the point that women are too emotional to be logical as well.

This is absolutely true, across the board.
When was the last time a male was called "bossy"?
