As a very general concept, and I'm guilty of this too for sure, people don't have the foggiest idea of what exactly has to be done to make food in the varieties/availability that exist at the prices we see in supermarkets. I imagine if we could conceptualize everything that goes into it and get rid of the most egregiously poor treatment of workers, land, an animals, food prices would not be recognizable.

No, they would not. But this goes back to stagnant wages. We need to be able to pay workers more so they can afford higher prices on necessities.

I'm seeing the average pay in my industry shrink with globalization and competition. A front end web developer was once easily a six figure job with 3-5 years experience. Now the only jobs that have that kind of salary require 15 or more years experience or are very far and few between.

For example, Glass Door recently listed a Front End Developer position in Boston with 5 years experience required where the salary was listed as $15 an hour. $15 an hour is not a livable wage in Boston.

Average pay ranges are now nationally 55k to 70k a year for the 5 to 10 year experience range which I fall into.

I don't see a path to six figures without getting to a VP level. And then my job would be less about doing the work, and more about management.

My company has not had cost of living adjustments for 3 years now. This started before COVID. And now because of COVID they have confirmed that cost of living adjustments are no longer a thing for the foreseeable future. This means no annually 1 to 3 percent pay bump for us. The only way to get a raise is a promotion or switch companies. And promotions have been on hold since the start of COVID. They have not given a set date when they will resume for us yet.

I try to buy most of my meat beyond mince at the local small butcher. Honestly whilst it’s more expensive it isn’t unrecognisably so. It might be different if you were trying to feed a family on minimum wage. That’s kinda partially where ideas of a living wage come in though. That said if we went back to pre 1950s levels of meat eating our checkout bills would be much lower. That said as a certified salad dodger I'm being more than a little hypocritical saying that 😂

The initial tweet by this guy basically said he doesn't support any student loan relief unless it benefits him.

And of course I love how he thinks he should get a refund for the interest he paid on his loans.

Yes, setting the interest rate to 0 is nothing. It will help pay off loans much faster. However it doesn't give anyone who is still paying $600 a month now any relief until they pay off their loans. Meanwhile those who did pay off their loans get a big check.

I love how those in a better financial position propose ideas that benefit them the most. And if it doesn't benefit them, they don't support it.

Talk about greed and being selfish.

it’s more about being shortsighted. Does it benefit him directly no, indirectly yes and there will be a better economy with people spending lots of money that they normally wouldn’t.

Rolling blackouts in Texas are apparently not rolling blackouts. The idea of rolling blackouts is to cut power to one area for about 45 minutes, then restore power while cutting it from another area.

But that has not been happening in Texas. There are many people going on 3 1/2 days now without power. People who have not lost power are not losing power. People who have lost power either still do not have it back, or had a long duration blackout until enough supply became available to bring them back online. This appears to be the norm across the state and not the exception.

It was maybd 10 years back, when the cashier had to enter product numbers into the register by hand , i still remember vividly how fast they were at Aldi. Germany was generally later than God's or gb with scanner checkouts but Aldi was a couple of years later than the rest here

Oh right, they probably landed here and UK about 2000 and have always had barcode scanners! In fact at almost 38 i don’t think I’ve ever been in a larger supermarket that didn’t have a barcode scanner.

I do miss the old days of paying by card when they use to take an impressiom of your card on the carbon paper. There was something oddly satisfying about that as opposed to tap tap go.

My sister is in College Station and has been very lucky. They did have sporadic (and a lot longer than 45 min), but sufficient, rolling blackouts until today. Her pipes froze but they were able to thaw them after a day without. She also has a house in Bastrop that currently has an Airbnb tenant and they had a similar power situation, but have been without water due to lack of pressure for several days. Terrible that it is so inconsistent and that many people are not nearly as lucky.

Yeah, half my work team is based in Dallas and about half of them still don’t have power. It’s wild.

Anecdotally, at my place in San Antonio (which, admittedly, sits on one of the more prominent grids connected to downtown hospitals/businesses/etc) power was out for about 25 solid hours. It continued to roll off and on for hours at a time up through yesterday. I consider myself lucky. There were many around the city whose power went out a full day before mine and had continuous outages throughout 3-4 days. Shameful.

I need a little bit of help with the Ted Cruz thing.

Is he a totally repugnant, malignant, hypocritical, corrupt, dishonest, unctuous piece of shit? ABSOLUTELY.

Do I need literal breaking news alerts coming to me on my phone confirming that he did go to Cancun? Not at all.

I just...don’t quite get why THIS is the thing he’s gonna twist in the wind for. Leaving Texas in a crisis is bad optics, totally, but it’s not like he abandoned his post — his post isn’t even in business this week, and even if it was, his post has nothing to do with the state’s energy policy.

But I know that argument is tired and ignores the power a US Senator can wield to pull strings for people in need. Okay. I’ll accept that. But that implies that Ted is the kind of guy who WOULD do that, if only he were in town. Does anyone believe that if the Cruzes had stayed in Texas, that he would be doing ANYTHING substantive to alleviate his constituents’ suffering? No way. He’d be tweeting and going on Fox to blame this on leftists, and still using his privilege to stay warm and connected to the grid.

Dunking on Cruz is great but is it actually important in this instance in some way that I’m missing? How is he gonna draw nationwide criticism for THIS but not for helping to incite the Capitol riot and then using his position as a juror to conspire with the defense to get Trump acquitted? Motherfucker clearly feels no shame, or any compulsion to help his fellow Texans, so what was accomplished here?
I wonder if it's just the straw that broke the camel's back. You can only be a total fuckhead for so long before you eventually eat shit.

I think the only difference here is that there isn't really anything he can say to make it look better to his average voter. I don't have faith that it is different enough to change anything and it certainly isn't the worst thing he's done this year. Too bad it is harder to convince them on the more tangible things that you mention.
