Political Discussion

The Apple V. Netherlands is interesting. Apple was just fined 5 Million Euro for the 9th consecutive week in a row. The maximum fine cap will be reached next week.

Dutch regulators back in January required that Apple allow dating apps to use third party payment processors as the 30% app store fee was "anti competitive".

Apple responded by allowing dating apps to submit a separate binary that allows for third party payment processors to be submitted for the Netherlands app store only.

Dutch regulators said this doesn't go far enough and want to allow third party payment processors for dating apps through the app binary that is globally available. Meaning that regulators would be changing the way dating apps work globally and not just in their country.

Apple is refusing to allow this and has filed an appeal that they have met the requirements of the law. Meanwhile they continue to get fined.

The United States and UK may pass similar requirements with regulations soon. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I think we've touched on this in here before but the idea of an actual split of this country seems more and more likely by the day. The Right is getting so sickeningly extreme in their policies and attitudes it just doesn't make sense to even try to reason with them anymore.

The idea that my family and I might have to pick up and leave simply because we don't support the state we live in just seemed so crazy to me before, and now it's almost like I'm crazy not to move somewhere more progressive. That and the constant worry that we'll get another Trump... What does a split even look like?

Well, it's interesting seeing the republicans stretch to find reasons to not support Biden's SCOTUS nominee.

So far the best they have is they don't like the people she associates with because they accept funding from far left extremist donors.

lol

The other thing which I find sickening is they are trying to play the high ground saying Republicans won't stoop the level of democrats at smearing a person's character and asking ridiculous questions like "do you like beer?". In other words, they completely dismiss that there might have been anything there with Kavanaugh.

As if they were ever going to support a Dem president’s nom is the funny part. Why they simply don’t just say “You won’t follow conservative doctrine and allow us to legislate from the bench is why we cannot confirm you” and be done with this farce.

I think it pretty sad we have gotten a to this point in American politics. I was watching a PBS documentary on Pelosi last night and she got a standing ovation from all of congress when she took her oath of office back in 1987. That would be unthinkable these days.

God this country is so corrupt. Your leading Alabama Republican senate candidate at the moment.

This was in the UK. I am certain that if we did a similar analysis, we would find the same here.

I think this says everything about just how terrible things are getting right now.

Meanwhile:

All of what we are seeing in this world is a symptom of increasing inequality.

And these completely unregulated crypto markets truly terrify me. It’s going to make inequality deepen and make organised crime, terrorism and rogue state actions so much less traceable. And that’s without it’s already apparent disastrous environmental consequences.

My favorite is how Tom Brady is hocking Cryptocurrency like it's a safe, regulated consumer product. I can't believe they are allowing ads for crypto-currency without a ton of caveats regarding gambling.

Meanwhile there are plenty of boomers that see no problem with this. For example they say "it doesn't matter how rich the wealthy get. It doesn't matter and it's irrelevant. What's important and not reported on is poverty levels have been on the decline and have declined every year over the past 40 years."

But poverty levels really have not changed much. The living wage has. So far more people are struggling to make a livable wage and a comfortable lifestyle is available for fewer people.

We shouldn't be celebrating the decline in poverty, we should be concerned about the increase of people not making a living wage and looking into what we can do about that.

My local politicians have been touting repealing the gas tax we have in CA. I guess they don’t realize the the subsidies we give oil is a much larger pool of money to pull from.

Not to mention the Eldritch horrors that will awaken from the depths.
