Political Discussion

Wow, really helpful...

So what's that, an extra 90 days before they start collecting. To me it just sounds like they will just keep pushing it back until after midterms and hope it dies. Blame republicans and not actually do anything about student loan debt.

When my dad told me I said I hope it gets pushed till the day I die. Honestly I’m in my 6th year of 10 to get public service forgiveness.

I'm in my 12th year of paying back my student loans and owe double now than what I graduated with back in 2008. I see no end in sight.

But that's my problem, because I made the "unwise" choice to defer my student loans during the recession and use the income repayment plan when laid off. So essentially, because I couldn't afford to pay them interest ballooned and that's my fault for poor financial planning and has nothing to do with predatory student loans, skyrocketing cost of education and a recession that left me in low wage jobs for a a few years after graduating. Got to love it.

Same here. I think I had federal loans and let Sallie Mae buy them up because it meant no or low payments on the short term. I’m currently paying the lowest amount possible and, barring some major windfall, will just be paying that eternally.

The fact that our government won’t stand up to the predatory corporations that put an entire generation into indentured servitude really speaks to whom/what holds the power in this country.

And I hate that they say it's my own damn fault because:
  • I borrowed more than I could afford to pay back to get an education.
  • I didn't have a job lined up / plan to pay it back before taking out the debt (who does when starting a 4 year degree).
  • I deferred my student loans
  • I took the cheapest repayment options because that's all I could afford
And I hate when experts say to pay off student loans you should never pay the minimum payment. Just like credit cards. You should be paying at least twice the minimum.

Well, let's pay living wages and get the cost of housing under control and then maybe, just maybe I could do that.

To add insult to injury, they say every reason I list for my predicament are just excuses. And it all falls back to the poor decisions I made and it it's no one else's fault.

lol, my father just texted me to inform me about student loans being pushed back again.

When I went into a rant about how this still does nothing to solve the issue he told me that Trump will take care of it if reelected.

Says:
All derivatives are wiped out. (Loans made to banks...credit cards...ect...Not debt owed to another person). Reasons- loans were made fraudulently. They never had the $ in the first place. They created it from nothing. But we know that. It backed up by nothing but good will.😆

And Trump will set this all right when back in office.

Yeah, I don't think so.

Hey, in his defense Trump has a long history of not paying back the money he owes people.

The GOP continues to attack abortion rights at the state level.

Here are two major things that happened within the last week.

Oklahoma passed a near complete ban on abortions on Tuesday sending to the Governor's desk to sign. The bill would make all abortions illegal with the exception of a medical emergency where the abortion is medically needed to save the pregnant woman's life.

Missouri also passed a bill, and this one leaves me scratching my head. What were they thinking. It's a total new angle at limiting access at abortions. In Missouri's bill they made "trafficking abortion inducing drugs" illegal. This means that these drugs can not be prescribed, manufactured, exported, transported or delivered within the state under the new law.

Maybe it's preemptive and comprehensive so if the clinics are gone thé home remedies are too?

Mitch McConnell sat down with Axios for a rare interview over the weekend. I have yet to watch this episode of Axios and likely will catch up on it soon. But I heard NPR via Alexa's morning brief yesterday summarize the interview. And according to NPR, in classical Mitch McConnell fashion, the most notable things are what he wouldn't provide an answer for.

When asked if republicans regained the senate majority after the 2022 midterm elections and regrained his position of senate majority leader, if a vacancy in the supreme court should occur within the next year, would he allow a hearing for Biddens nomination. Note a vote mind you, just a hearing like he denied for Obama's Nominee 11 months before the election.

Mitch McConnell would not answer this question. NPR political analyst summarized that this essentially means that democratic norms have been thrown out the window and that if the opposition party is in control of the senate there will be no hearings for supreme court nominations. At least if there is a democrat in the white office and the GOP controls the senate.

It annoys me to no end that this kind of bullshit is allowed. At the very least, there should be some repercussions for this kind of bullshit.

The opportunity to expand the court has been squandered. McConnell's legacy will be the conservative ideology that will dominate SC rulings for the rest of our lives.
Democrats continue to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Mostly (IMO) because they're complacent and partly because they're unwilling to make moneymen unhappy by doing things that are popular and people want/need but don't make money -- e.g. medicare for all, student loan forgiveness, basically anything that would actually help anyone that isn't a millionaire.

And this is ultimately why the democrats are failing and will continue to fail.
The south is really racist and prejudice.

And yet the most segregated school systems in America are found in New York, California, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois, Michigan and Maryland.

Let's all laugh at how blatantly racist the South is so we can deflect from our own community's problems.

I am not laughing at the south's racism, just more depressed it by than anything. Plenty of racists everywhere unfortunately.

I get it. I'm a little prickly today.

There's huge problems with racism all over the place, but I feel like people single out the South because they would rather not talk about real issues in other places that are supposed to be so much more "progressive".
