Speaking of talks with parents, I had an interesting conversation with my mother about question 4 on the ballot in MA.
Question 4 would repeal a law that allows people in the country illegally to obtain a drivers license (not a real ID). It was passed some time after DACA, and it's main purpose was to allow DACA recipients to be able to get a license so they can drive to work.
This bill started with a rough ride, it was vetoed by governor Charlie Baker (R), but then state lawmakers override the veto with their super majority vote.
Voters were made they didn't get a say in this law, and now it's on the ballot to repeal.
My mother is for the most part liberal, always voting democrat. But when it comes to this question, her mind is set to vote to repeal this law.
When I was talking to her about it, she kept saying "how she has always had to jump through hoops to prove citizenship and ID and now we are giving driver's licenses away for free to illegals".
No matter how many times I corrected her, she kept coming back to "giving away for free". They are not getting drivers licenses for free. They have to pay the same fees as the rest of us. This was something she was worked up about.
I tried to explain, think about children brought over when they were like 4 years old, grew up in our country, went to our schools and then get a job and need to be able to get to said job. My mother kept saying that they should apply to become citizens or take an Uber. If they are in the country illegally they shouldn't have a license.
I kept telling my mother, they would apply to become citizens if they could. Our system in most cases, doesn't allow them to. And of course that went back to, well, they came to the country illegally, they shouldn't be here.
