Political Discussion

Florida has always favored Republicans over Democrats as long as I have been alive, but I find it interesting that the latest demographics show that there has been a seismic shift to the right since 2020.

Democrats have stalled in voter registration since 2020 but Republicans have surged. Hispanic voters have turned in large numbers to the GOP and have opened the door for Republicans to Winning Miami. The heavily populated areas once strongly controlled by democrats have become a battleground where Republicans have a good shot at winning due to having the Hispanic vote.

Other factors attributed towards the surge is Money. Republicans have spent more money than ever in Florida since 2020 far outpacing Democrats.

W/hat I don't understand, is why in both Florida and Texas, the Hispanic vote has largely been shifting to the Republicans. You think all the anti immigration rhetoric would prevent that, but I guess not.
Religion is a hell of a thing, man.

That and majority of Hispanics in South Florida are probably Cubans and Venezuelans. Republicans harp on todays democrats wanting socialism in America which they want no part of. Obviously not the truth, but I am sure it works.

Also democratic socialism doesn’t look at all like Cuba or Venezuela, it looks like Europe pre the 2008 financial crisis.

Religion, fear of "socialism" (my BFF's mom is from Mexico and she has horrible memories of state run health care), and many Hispanics that are in Florida are not illegals and they really do respond to the anti immigration rhetoric because they jumped through the hoops to immigrate the right way or they are naturalized Americans and see a lot of issues with illegal immigrants. If you look at Texas, the same phenomenon is happening in border towns.

Left largely unreported in the national press is that hundreds of thousands of Latino voters in rural Texas — the sons and daughters of early legal migration — also felt repulsed by the 2019 mass-migration crisis during which nearly one million illegal Central Americans swamped the border as Democratic voices encouraged it, litigated efforts to staunch the tide, and promised open gates under a Biden administration.

"The immigration thing was another reason. A lot of our community from Mexico came here legally. Others were born here in Texas," said Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez, a lifelong Democrat who stuck to his own party and won a fourth term in Val Verde County, which turned red around him for the first time in decades.

"The general feeling is that if someone comes to the U.S. they need to do it legally. I think that was probably a good majority of the Republican vote, yes."

Humanity keeps proving it was a mistake

how does this shit keep happening? Being apathetic isn’t a solution and just contributes to the problem. And fuck all the people who keep supporting these right wing racist and fascist POS politicians.

On the plus side, I believe this is expected to be the last "big" hike, as we've started to show signs of being past the peak and moving towards de-inflation. Not deflation, but just less inflation.

Tough to say, while we might be showing signs of slowing, most of europe is seeing huge increases in inflation.

So we are not out of the woods yet. This winter could be a rough ride as we see supply chain shortages in natural gas and diesel.

We have already been warned that we may see blackouts here in Salem this winter. The shortage of liquified natural gas, and higher energy demands for heating will result in not having enough supply to generate electricity. Virtually all the power plants in New England states have shifted over to generating power from liquified natural gas. And there is heavy competition with Europe to secure supply.

Electricity prices have already been doubled for us.

Shared the video with my father, who I knew would not have a good reception to it. He told me to stop watching socialist propaganda. 🤣

Very informative video though, well worth the watch to learn about different types of democratic elections and where we rank with the rest of the world.

I'm impressed you feel comfortable sharing stuff like that with him. I fear the conversations it would spark with my parents.

Speaking of talks with parents, I had an interesting conversation with my mother about question 4 on the ballot in MA.

Question 4 would repeal a law that allows people in the country illegally to obtain a drivers license (not a real ID). It was passed some time after DACA, and it's main purpose was to allow DACA recipients to be able to get a license so they can drive to work.

This bill started with a rough ride, it was vetoed by governor Charlie Baker (R), but then state lawmakers override the veto with their super majority vote.

Voters were made they didn't get a say in this law, and now it's on the ballot to repeal.

My mother is for the most part liberal, always voting democrat. But when it comes to this question, her mind is set to vote to repeal this law.

When I was talking to her about it, she kept saying "how she has always had to jump through hoops to prove citizenship and ID and now we are giving driver's licenses away for free to illegals".

No matter how many times I corrected her, she kept coming back to "giving away for free". They are not getting drivers licenses for free. They have to pay the same fees as the rest of us. This was something she was worked up about.

I tried to explain, think about children brought over when they were like 4 years old, grew up in our country, went to our schools and then get a job and need to be able to get to said job. My mother kept saying that they should apply to become citizens or take an Uber. If they are in the country illegally they shouldn't have a license.

I kept telling my mother, they would apply to become citizens if they could. Our system in most cases, doesn't allow them to. And of course that went back to, well, they came to the country illegally, they shouldn't be here.

My mom, a Canadian citizen and Permanent resident of the US, has on many occasions remarked the state of immigration from a "conservative" standpoint. Despite the fact that we were very illegal for quite a few years... It's always "Well, we would have done it properly if we could have afforded to"

Yup... you're right there mom...
