Political Discussion

lol, I keep hearing the most important thing on the GOP's agenda is to repeal all the new IRS agents hired by the Inflation Reduction Act after the midterm elections.

Of course it has to do with not enforcing the rich to pay up their fair share.

In other things-are-increasingly-divided-but-one-side-sure-seems-more-nazi-ish news, this tweet prompting this article has been rolling around in my head:

It brings me back to my post a couple weeks back about YouTube cultural reactionaries and the underlying fascism that’s being seeded into complaints about Star Wars and Marvel.

What really worries me is how nostalgia for the bright spots of our childhood is being leveraged to imply “woke politics” (a now-meaningless phrase) have ruined our culture, and returning to the candy-colored womb of corporate media and consumption is the only way. It’s so hinged on capitalism, as well as this lie that mainstream culture was ever perfect, good, or remotely concerned about our individual interests.

When you consider the rise of naziism was paved by calls to return to an idealized time, one taken by an enemy class/caste, and all the shit with Kanye, it’s pretty upsetting.

Especially concerning for DACA recipients.

This won't have any horrible implications for our future workforce, right? right? ri....

  • There were 1.05 million more disabled working-age Americans in August 2022 compared to January 2020, according to data compiled by Richard Deitz, an economist at the NY Fed.
  • "The majority [of the newly disabled] deal with fatigue and brain fog, the hallmarks of long COVID," he writes.

It doesn't look good for Affirmative Action, which is close to falling to the current SCOTUS.

9 states have already abolished affirmative action, and in those states the number of white admissions has remained the same or risen while the admission rates of minorities have plunged in at least a few of the 9 states.

Conservative's biggest issue with Affirmative Action is the lack of clarity around an end date. They state there must be a clear deadline / goal for when Affirmative Action is no longer necessary.

Data to date has shown it is still necessary, and states that have abolished it have proved that enrollment rates of minorities can plummet.

But of course, to conservatives, we have moved well beyond the point where affirmative action is still necessary as didn't you know, racism no longer exists at our institutions

The SCOTUS last heard a case on Affirmative Action in 2003, where it left it in place and said inequality could be looked at again in 25 years. Conservatives have interpreted that ruling as being a 25 year deadline to end Affirmative Action. And the fact that no action has been put in place at the federal level to abolish it not any target dates or goals set they believe to be in bad faith of that ruling.

Sound like we gotta press 'em for an end date for racism and white supremacy itself. Check and mate.

Well, going to respectfully bow out of a healthcare debate with someone, because I can see no matter what point or what points I make I'm just not going to get through.

I mean, how do you even respond to this, when you say a single payer system would be better than our current system if we don't half access it leave portions of it for profit/privatized.

"If everything is done right..." the Bernie Sanders solution... don't you understand... it will not happen! We haven't even bothered taking the time to save social security or medicare in it's current rendition. Relatively small tasks compared to all the "perfect solutios" too many think exist. I have not seen anything here about "personal responsibility... to care for ourselves." Is that one automatically off the table? Not mine. Whatever solution, in my opinion, will have a lifetime buyin... an entitlement based system. Why? Not giving this stuff away... particularly as we have seen the current invasion from the south.

This is what makes me sick about so much green policy. The poorest, who can least afford expensive green technologies are being taxed to fuck on petrol and heating badly insulated inefficient homes. Yet the rich can go on fucking the planet from a position where they could make a sizeably bigger difference by addressing their lifestyles.

It's even more sickening when you find out that our governments have been cutting taxes on the top 1% lifestyle activities rather than targeting them with appropriate carbon taxes.

Florida has always favored Republicans over Democrats as long as I have been alive, but I find it interesting that the latest demographics show that there has been a seismic shift to the right since 2020.

Democrats have stalled in voter registration since 2020 but Republicans have surged. Hispanic voters have turned in large numbers to the GOP and have opened the door for Republicans to Winning Miami. The heavily populated areas once strongly controlled by democrats have become a battleground where Republicans have a good shot at winning due to having the Hispanic vote.

Other factors attributed towards the surge is Money. Republicans have spent more money than ever in Florida since 2020 far outpacing Democrats.

W/hat I don't understand, is why in both Florida and Texas, the Hispanic vote has largely been shifting to the Republicans. You think all the anti immigration rhetoric would prevent that, but I guess not.
