Political Discussion

Hey they found documents at Pence’s house.

First of all, what the fuck is wrong with these guys?

They should just have a one day amnesty day. All politicians please turn in any classified shit you have.
They're old and can't hardly remember their own name anymore. They shouldn't be allowed near classified material. Especially that brains for shit Trump, but seriously they're all incredibly dumb people who shouldn't have any power.

“You see a lower percentage of people at the high end of the income distribution filing for unemployment,” Challenger said, “because they either don’t have the time, the patience or the really deep need to file unemployment claims.

This is interesting. I had never thought that when high income earners are laid off, they rarely ever apply for unemployment or are counted in unemployment statistics.

And it makes sense. They don't have the real need to, nor do they likely have the patients or time to be bothered by the process. High income workers often get severages. Regular workers do not. It's not uncommon for high income workers to get 36 weeks of pay or more as part of a severance package. Which in most cases, is enough to live off of until they find their next job.

Can you get unemployment with a severance package?

And the answer is maybe depending on the laws of your state. Also, getting a severance package could lower an unemployment payments that you could get. If you are getting a monthly allotment of severance, it could stop you from receiving unemployment payments. So not only could it be a waste of time, but a waste of time that gives you no money.

Severance is often paid as a lump sum, though it can be paid out in installments as well. With a lump sum payment, you may be entitled to unemployment benefits after you've received that money. Severance that's paid in installments, however, could compromise your ability to collect those benefits since you're still receiving a steady stream of income. But again, the laws vary by state, and in some parts of the country, severance is not considered earned wages for unemployment purposes, which means it won't stop you from collecting benefits.

On Tuesday, the Doomsday clock was set at 90 seconds until midnight — the closest to the hour it has ever been, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which created the clock in 1947. Midnight represents the moment at which we will have made Earth uninhabitable for humanity. From 2020 to 2022, the clock was set at 100 seconds to midnight.

Oh, that's just lovely.

In MA, it depends on how the severance package is paid out.

In the case of my mothers co-workers, the answer is yes. They got one lump sum, so in MA, they can all go file for and collect unemployment now.

In the case of the layoffs at my company last month, the answer would be no. At least for awhile, as their severance package was continue to pay your semi monthly paychecks for 3 months. Because you are still getting continuous pay here, unemployment would be reduced to next to nothing for 3 months if you even get anything.

Walmart just had to raise their minimum wage from $12 to $14 an hour because they were having a lot of trouble retaining workers in a tight job market when their competition (Amazon, Costco and what not) pays more. This new minimum wage is still below some states minimum wage. For example, here in MA the minimum wage is now $15 an hour as of January 1st.

It's always been a goal of mine to get a severance package, but I'm no longer in a career that has those.

The two times I have been laid off were during the recession, and I got no severance packages. Being a junior level and being right out of college and not having X amount of years at the companies at the time meant I didn't qualify for anything.

But over all in my industry, severances are hit or miss. Not all companies do it. And companies that do it, don't do it with every layoff. Just with reorganizations. Not because "they lost a client" and aren't going to make their numbers.

The way my mother's company handled severances yesterday was a lump sum payout, 1 week pay for every year of employment you had. Which was down from the 2 weeks pay for each year of employment they did with the last big layoff a few years back. It also means, if you have been there less than a year you get nothing. And if you only been there for a year or two the severance really is not all that impressive.

Yeah that's crap. When I worked in tech they were much better. Most folks I knew at IBM and HP each got a year severance and at the smaller places like Sun and Seagate they got six months. A lot of times they'd do layoffs at the end of a quarter than hire back on the next month. It's how a bunch of engineers in Colorado that I knew bought their houses. The VP who I reported to had laid himself off a few times at different companies. He said the staff always thought he was so kind to do it so they wouldn't lose their job but he said he always did it because he knew the severance package was too good to pass up and could get another job easily enough, take a month vacation, and have a fat payday.

Here is a rare ruling by the SCOTUS that was unanimous. The liberal justices sided with the conservatives. Wonder if this was a case they just thought wasn't worth dissenting over or they really had the same interpretation of the law.

Basically, this ruling says there are no exceptions. Veterains can't apply for disability benefits retroactively if they missed the deadline. It doesn't matter if they missed the deadline because of their disability or say, being in a coma...

I imagine this will do wonders for recruitment efforts for military service.

So much for championing those who are willing to defend our freedoms. 😣

This morning the government served up Home Office minister Chris Philp as the broadcast-round sacrifice. Philp has been involved in multiple firms that have gone bust, in some cases reportedly owing money to the taxman. I note he describes himself as a “serial entrepreneur”, which is a bit like someone with syphilis describing themselves as a “hopeless romantic”

Amazon has launched RxPass, a monthly subscription that is only $5 a month if you have prime.

It's only a small lists of generics but could probably help some people. None of my medications or conditions are listed, so it's not for me, but I hope someday there is a solution like this that is cheaper than going through insurance.
