Political Discussion

The South Korean government was this week forced to rethink a plan that would have raised its cap on working hours to 69 per week, up from the current limit of 52, after sparking a backlash among Millennials and Generation Z workers.

Workers in the east Asian powerhouse economy already face some of the longest hours in the world – ranking fourth behind only Mexico, Costa Rica and Chile in 2021, according to the OECD – and death by overwork (“gwarosa”) is thought to kill scores of people every year.

Yet the government had backed the plan to increase the cap following pressure from business groups seeking a boost in productivity – until, that is, it ran into vociferous opposition from the younger generation and labor unions.

Let me guess, those business groups probably also pay salary and getting more hours out of people without handing out more pay is probably the name of the game. Pretty much slave labor for the working class.

The main topic of the latest John Oliver was timeshares. Wow, I knew these things were bad news, but wow. Their contracts basically have you signing consent that salespeople can lie to you about anything. You can't sue them for false advertising and the timeshare is for life, you can't end it. How are these things legal?

The show also opened on a segment of on SVB. And how Fox News and conservatives are explaining the bank failure. And every clip John Oliver had included the word "Woke Bank" or "Wokeness". And yup, they blamed the failure on woke policies.

Guess I'm just spamming this thread as I'm the only one posting over the last few days.

Today Biden vetoed his first bill as president. And of course this was the first bill Republicans successfully passed in both the house, and the senate by getting Joe Manchin and Jon Tester siding with the Republicans.

This is the nature of the bill vetoed:

President Joe Biden issued the first veto of his presidency Monday on a resolution to overturn a retirement investment rule that allows managers of retirement funds to consider the impact of climate change and other environmental, social and governance factors when picking investments.

And here are the views from both the right and left on this investment rule:

Opponents of the rule have argued that it politicizes retirement investments and that the Biden administration is using it as a way to promote a liberal agenda.

Republican Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming said at a news conference earlier this year, “What’s happened here is the woke and weaponized bureaucracy at the Department of Labor has come out with new regulations on retirement funds, and they want retirement funds to be invested in things that are consistent with their very liberal, left-wing agenda.”

Supporters of the rule argue that it is not a mandate – it allows, but does not require, the consideration of environmental, social and governance factors in investment selection.

So basically, just basically trying to undo the other parties policies. Not surprising coming from the Republicans.

One thing that is surprising though is the number of vetos is historically low.

Sure we we can say it's because the Dems controlled both the house and the senate as well as the white house until this year. But I would like to see / compare too the number a bills landing on each president's desk to sign. I'm willing to bet they are also at a historic low with how dysfunctional our elected leaders are these days.

Woke as a politicized weapon is frustrating. Translates to woe is the oppressed rich white male.

Meanwhile...

But trying to do anything to combat climate change is now labeled as woke, liberal agendas and weaponized politics.

And Biden? He just opened drilling for oil in the Alaska Wildlife Refuge, something he said he would never do in his campaign promises.

The future sure looks bleak.

This is the stupidest timeline.

Well this is both excellent and probably terrifying.

Still waiting for this to happen, but I don't have any expectations that it will.

But Trump coming out and saying this did achieve one thing. And that is getting the GOP controlled house to act as his legal shield.

I have now seen several Apple News alerts about how the House GOP is taking extraordinary measures to shield / protect Trump and have launch a formal investigation into the Manhattan DA who could bring charges.

Yeah, I assumed that was part of his strategy. Plus I don't have much confidence that the Manhatten DA will move on this after declining to move on the other possible charges that all the lawyers involved in the grand jury thought would be a solid case before they quit. Georgia still might, but I'm really not expecting anything. One can hope though.
