Political Discussion

Biden's first veto is proving to be controversial.

For me it makes total sense to have a rule to allow for managers of retirement funds to consider the impact of climate change and other environmental, social and governance factors when picking investments. This is not a mandate, and I think is important for allowing ethical decisions to be made. And we all know that with it not being a mandate, most managers of retirement funds will not change how they pick investments.

However, I have read opinion piece after opinion piece that basically says this veto has Biden turning his back on middle class Americans. That Biden should have vetoed this bill, because the most import thing to the middle class is being able to make the most out of our investments. And this rule prevents that from happening, thus it's not good for our economy or retirement funds and pushes politics over the middle class.

There is even an opinion piece on CNN pushing this narrative.

Why do we have to politicize anything that is ethical or good for the future of mankind. Even something as small as this that won't come anywhere close to helping us cap global warming, but is at least a start.

Maximizing profits over everything I guess.

The feds raised interest rates by a quarter of a percent today to combat stubborn inflation. This increase is less than they were planning to make two weeks ago, driven by the failure of 2 banks as to not be as a large a shock to the financial system if they had gone with a much more substantial rate hike they were thinking was needed to cool down inflation that was heating back up.

Water could soon become more profitable than oil. And Wall Street is already taking steps to invest in water and turning a profit supplying it to the western portion of the united states where water supplies are quickly drying up.

And this infuriates me. yes we need to solve the water problem, but we shouldn't do so by seeking profits and exploiting those in need of a necessity.

Please elaborate.
All of the events in this particular time line seem to be made in such a way that it royally f*cks all of humanity. We are being stupid and have allowed power to be put in the stupidest hands.

So basically, no chance of peace and that China and Russia are aligning against the west.
Okay, so here's the thing with China, they can't piss off Russia. Besides the fact that they are neighbors, though China is big, it's not very fertile, and gets a lot of it's food and fuel from Russia. China doesn't want any sort of war in Russia because 1. it supplies them with food and fuel and it will not be able to do that effectively if it's in open conflict and 2. did I mention they are neighbors?

The best case scenario for China is for Russia to stop conflict in Ukraine so helping to foster peace, helps China. China doesn't want to be in active conflict with anyone, let alone with their best customer--because we buy a lot of stuff from China. However, we (the US) as a power center, are eroding. China doesn't need to entice us into conflict, we are killing ourselves with toxic trains, bipartisan bickering, and consumerism. China is just waiting for our eventual demise, and for us to break apart from the inside.
At least here (and in some ways it is still true), the working class was part of the middle class.
The working class = the middle class

If someone trades their time for wages to pay their bills, they are working class. If someone owns assets that make money for them so they don't have to trade their time for wages, they are not working class. "Middle class" is a convenient term that these non-working people use to split the working class and create arguments in the working class, so we don't look at the people who don't work and exploit the rest of us.

Arkansas just became the 4th state to ban trans kids at school from using the bathroom of the gender they identify with Sanders signing the bill into law yesterday.

Kids must use the bathroom that matches the gender assigned at birth at schools.

The bill does allow for schools to accommodate transgender students with a single-person restroom that is gender neutral. But provides no funding for schools to remodel to add these types of bathrooms. So the concern is they will never be a real option for transgender kids.

The superintendents, principals and teachers can be fined $1,000 for not enforcing the law. Students can be suspended or expelled for using the wrong bathroom.

There has been a resurgence in bathroom bills introduced by conservative lawmakers this year. With 25 other states having bathroom bills in the works so far this year surpassing the number of bills introduced in 2016 already when bathroom bills were at their peak, or rather previous peak.

All in the name of "common sense child safety". But it will only accomplish the opposite of that by daemonizing transgender kids and increasing suicide rates.

So now the school will have female passing students in a male (gendered) bathroom? I have no idea how this is more healthy for everyone than them having to go in their passing bathroom. Both situations create problems for school districts. They (trans kids) will probably just use the bathroom in the nurses office just like they have been for a while now.

What is there reasoning behind this? Is it that they are afraid of a "male" being in the girls bathroom being a "perve" or that by allowing this we are indoctoring our kids?
