Political Discussion

Jesus I hadn’t even thought about medical costs. Because I’m union my insurances costs are pretty low. They cover me, my wife, our kid. Everything is pretty much a copay and that’s it. He had the flu recently. His birth I think was under our current plan. 0$. It could have been on medicare we were just out of grad school. i always say to my wife that it’s important I keep this job because Of the health care and retirement. There is a lot of headaches with my job because I’m with a district, but I stick with it for those two reasons. My wife does the same thing, but for a private company.

Any thoughts on the possibility of a contested convention? I know a lot of people have said they will vote for whomever gets nominated, but I imagine many will be turned off if the DNC decides to take the nom away from Bernie

As probably the most notorious Bernie supporter in this thread, there are only two circumstances where I’d refrain from voting for the eventual nominee.

1) The oligarch (who thinks America is his own Monopoly board) known as Bloomberg is the nominee

2) I see a concerted effort from the DNC to keep Sanders from being the nominee

Trump is insanely dangerous. But so is ignoring the fact that the DNC is basically run by the donor class at this point. I’ll vote for Amy or Pete or Biden despite having very real issues with all of them... unless it becomes clear that the DNC would rather risk Trump being the nominee than Bernie. Or I’m told that I’m supposed to pick between two racist billionaires.

It’s like Yang said at the last debate, Trump is the symptom, not the cause. There is a good chance that a centrist Democrat results in somebody even worse than Trump on the next go round (like Don Jr). But anyone with a brain should be willing to back the lesser of two evils when the worse of those two evils is basically platinum blond Jafar. Unless it becomes clear we’re so far gone either way (ala Bloomberg) that I should just go do the death dance (kids) while the world burns (because we have no future).

Also, I recommend both of these listens for people on all sides of the political spectrum. Liz is my spirit animal, and one of the only people in the media who articulates my world view for the masses. Glad she got picked up by the NYT. What makes LRC great, though, is having Rich, Josh and her come from every angle with respectful rebuttals. Josh is often wrong specifically because his husband is a DNC fundraiser which places him in a bubble, but he usually admits it when that becomes clear (see his repeated narrative that the polls should be trusted in regard to Biden).

I am all for Bernie (though I do find many of his most ardent supporters to be a bit much). I also know it's fun to bash on Pete or Biden or Bloomberg or whomever as being too conservative but I hope folks don't get too locked into their corners. Whomever ends up the nominee will need the support EVERYONE; Bernie will need Mayor Pete voters just as Mayor Pete would need Bernie supporters. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. There's a wannabe despot currently doing his damnedest to turn this Country into a Russian style oligarchy. He has to be resoundingly voted from office, If the election is close at all; they will do everything in their power to keep their idiot king in power. We can't let minutia divide us.

My mom and step dad are a big fan of NASCAR. I have been asked several times if I'm going to watch the Daytona 500 tomorrow.

It's not on my list of things so who knows if I would tune into it.

But now I know the answer is a no after seeing that this car is running:

I don't know if this is the media being anti Bernie Sanders, but I just heard a report that Bernie Sanders is holding strong with his core base. But he is not gaining support.

They basically said his campaign is dividing the democratic base. If he wins the primary he's going to struggle to get the backing from those who are currently voting for Bidden, Buttigieg and Klobuchar. While he's creating a movement for his base. He's not with these other candidates bases. They are strongly against his policies and fear the far lefts policies and medicare for all. They may not have a strong showing in the 2020 election. So will the movement on Bernie's base be enough to vote Trump out of office?

The people who are voting for Bidden, Buttigieg and Klobuchar tend to dislike change. They like the status quo. What they know. Madicare for all is an unknown for them. They are worried about higher taxes. Losing the insurance coverage they are used too.

I don’t believe it’s anti Bernie bias that is driving these concerns this is basically the whole ball of wax when it comes to the moderate and liberal wing of the Democratic Party currently. The other side of the coin would be that the progressive agenda that Bernie is offering up would spark excitement amongst citizens that might not have voted if a more moderate candidate were to win the nomination. I personally think regardless of who is nominated, the right is going to attempt to paint them as a Socialist the only difference with Bernie is he doesn’t shy away from the title. Beyond Bernie, many of the 20 or so seats the Dems picked up in congress in 2018 are worried that an ultra liberal candidate at the top would make it harder for them to get re-elected. The truth is no one knows what is going to happen. Could a Bernie nomination lead to a Corbin-esque style ass kicking come November where the GOP wins back total control of the Government? It is possible. Is it also possible that a Bernie nomination combined with disdain for Trump results in a much higher turnout resulting in a continuation of the “blue wave” that began in 2018 where Dems win back the White House and Senate and hold the House? Sure could. No one knows and in times of uncertainty many find change scary. In 2008 people thought an African-American candidate with an ethnic sounding name was a risky proposition too. Also NO ONE took Trump seriously in 2016 everybody figured he get stomped in the General but look what (unfortunately) happened there. No one knows what’s gonna happen and those trying to convince you that they do are just worried . Right now everyone should vote for the Candidate that inspires them the most. Everything else will shake out. Hopefully for the best.

Joe Biden was interviewed on Meet the Press this morning.

He called Bernie Sanders and Medicare for all Socialist in nature and said that is not who we are as a country pretty much.

He also answered one of my long standing questions. Who are the people they say love their private health insurance and want to keep it.

The miners. The miners unions have fought for the most comprehensive health insurance that exists in our country. They have fought for it for decades and have contributed towards it out of their paychecks. They would be giving it all up if we get Medicare For All.

My question though is, with Medicare For All being full comprehensive coverage on everything. Wouldn't they be getting the same great health insurance they currently have? Or could they actually be losing coverage benefits they have fought for

It’s a false dilemma, while it is correct that these unions did collectively bargain their health coverage, if Universal Healthcare did go into effect they would not lose coverage, I would argue they would actually GAIN a bargaining chip in that their employers would no longer have to pay out millions for healthcare they could instead negotiate more money to be put towards better pensions, wages, Safety, etc... If Universal Healthcare were to be enacted it would likely take years to roll out which would allow for plenty of time for unions to negotiate new terms.

Across the United States, Chinatowns in cities like Boston, Chicago, Philly, San Fran are feeling a huge impact from the Coronavirus.

Business is way way down amongst fears of the the coronavirus even though there have been no cases of coronavirus from these Chinatowns.

Local business in Chinatown are struggling and if this decline in business continues over the next couple of months, could put several out of business.

Yesterday in Boston, city officials organized a breakfast with local businesses and invited people out to let them know it's safe.

I understand people are taking precautions to protect themselves from Coronavirus. But why are they only applying these cautions against the Chinese community and not the general public? Is this rooted in Xenophobia and racism?

It also seems like they are uninformed. If there are zero cases of Coronavirus why do they treat Chinatown like ground zero?

Yes, it is and i have heard many reports of people from asian descent that are struggling in the moment with stares, people moving away in public transport etc. In my local newspaper there was a chinese artist in germany reporting that her gyn refused to let her into the office at an poointment because she was chinese.
