Political Discussion

I went to Lolla on Saturday. Conversation over the course of the day, among a very large group, shifted from how polling is tied between Trump and Biden to how everyone is freaking out over the cost of housing.

Historically Chicago has one of the most stable housing markets in the country. It never goes up to fast and rarely stumbles. It was one of the selling points of moving here.

Under Biden the average mortgage on a 2 bedroom Chicago condo has gone from roughly $1500 to 2k-- thus pricing out most lower class millenials no matter how much of down deposit we have saved up. Meanwhile, higher interest rates have done little to nothing to slow rent costs and so several people that were there now find themselves paying $1600 for a 1 bedroom instead of the $1300 they were paying a couple yesrs ago. Or around $1300 for a studio instead of $950.

And that doesn’t even consider that food is like 30-40% more expensive than at the start of 2022 here.

It’s moronic and out of touch that the the centrist media and the Biden administration appears confused over the fact that 51% of the country is extremely pessimistic over the economy and 14% wants nothing to do with voting for either candidate. Nobody gives a fuck about the unemployment rate when they can barely afford to keep a roof over their head.

Especially, when I have yet to see Biden utter the phrase “housing crises”.

Wealthy people can't see housing crises - they have land and equity and could not give any less of a fuck about the costs of housing.

The cost of housing has always been a problem in this area. Even if you make what is considered a comfortable middle class salary like me, if you live by yourself (single income) buying a house is completely out of reach and rent is considered living above your means.

You need to have equity from a previous land or house sale to really be in the game at all.

The lack of affordable housing is something they talk about a lot around here. But they are not talking about affordable housing for people like me. They are talking about housing for low income families. When it comes to people like me, what grinds me gears is they always seem to place the blame on me and my life choices. Like being single (as housing costs always based off of double income families and maximizing profits), or living above my means because I choose to not have a room mate. Or my favorite, "choosing to live in a high cost of living area" and that I "should just move somewhere where the cost of living is less".

There are a lot of very affluent people in MA. Boomers who were in the insurance, finance or bio pharma business. They made very good money, and had huge inheritance from wealthy parents and grand parents. They don't think twice about the cost of housing. All they think about is their property values might go down if you let "those people" into the neighborhood / build affordable housing. They don't even think people like me would be the intended target audience for a house or condo.

One of my co-workers grew up in one of those very affluent Boston suburbs. While she and her family wasn't rich, her friends families were. They had staff, private planes to fly them to the Cape every weekend during the summer. They wouldn't drive the 2 hours, they would fly. They also always had to use the local private airport. Because their mom would not pick them up at Logan International Airport. To much of an inconvenience.

I went to the leadership conference for my union this weekend and it was all about pushing politicians on their housing policies. The stats were appealing and we all know the effect it has on us and the students we serve.

I’m also currently looking for a condo. The prospect is depressing despite the bunch of money from selling my old house before the summer started. I don’t want that money to just go up in smoke.

Just going to put this here. WTF is going on in Montgomery?

This is awful. I hate this stuff; people cheering, laughing and narrating and all that is almost as bad. Ugly.

Here is a symptom of our current cultural wars in this country.

There is not complete data on this, but there are indications that Viagra may be more commonly slipped into someones drink than date rate drugs.

As one person caught and accused of doing this said: "You never know anymore these days" and "I wanted to see if she would get a boner".

There is fear that women may not actually be women, but actually be men. And people are going through extreme lengths such as slipping Viagra into a womens drink "just to be sure".

And this down right pisses me off. These people should get the book thrown at them.
