Political Discussion

Has anyone here ever volunteered to do a canvassing event before? I wanna get more politically active especially since I live in a battleground state now so tomorrow is my first event! Kinda nervous but also super excited
I did when I lived in Illinois in 2008. It’s was not a battleground state but it was in a very purple part of a very blue state. It was fun. You get to meet other politically minded people and provide local voters with information about your candidate. I am sure there are some creeps out there but I was lucky and never came across any.

Didn’t realize you had left Cali hope all is well in your new state.

I never lived in cali lol. I lived in South NJ and I moved to Pa in October. I am loving it here though!

I imagine doing it in 2008 and Illinois must have been a very different vibe to doing it in 2024 and PA lol. I am excited to meet some like minded people because I am feeling very passionate and I don’t know anyone here

Today I learned something new about sun screen and got infuriated by the beuarocratic process we have here in the United States once again.

Essentially, the United States classifies sun screen as a drug, and not a cosmetic like like pretty much the rest of the world. This means that any new formulas need to be approved by the FDA and required by law to be tested on animals.

There are new formulas for making sunscreen that are much more effective, and they are widely available in Europe, Japan and other regions. They were submitted for approval in the EU 20 years ago.

And to no surprise, these new formulas have not been approved in the United States yet. The main reason, the companies that make them not only worry of the multi million dollar FDA approval process that can take years, but also back lash against animal testing. Animal testing is banned in Europe and these companies have polices that say they never test on animals. They are afraid of backlash from consumers in the EU if they test on animals to get their new formula approved in the US.

Long story short, don't expect these new, better formulas for sun screen to be available in the united states any time soon, or maybe ever.

I’m confused as to how this is an issue (I have to admit, I haven’t looked at numbers) but wasn’t there a boom during COVID? Could a decrease just be a correction?

Sure, there was a little boom during COVID, but nothing like the baby boomers boom after WWII. Overall the trend for birth is down and still heading down.

Thus we have fewer people entering the workforce than retiring out of the workforce.

But after the boomers all die off/retire won’t it level off a bit?

Also, people retire later already. Also lots of people who should be retired working/reentering the workforce.

I also wonder how much gig jobs and people who have found alternative work skew the employment numbers too.

We’re not breeding enough, or paying high enough taxes to be able to cover the cost of state pensions going forward. The state pension as a percentage of welfare span is shocking even in the more generous with welfare European countries. For the millennials and the generations after the debate really is between working forever or mass immigration on a scale that we aren’t willing to comprehend.
