Political Discussion

Was listening to Apple News Podcasts again, and one thing they mentioned, as of last month, Trumps election chances are the highest they have ever been. Including during all of 2016. That is just seriously messed up that so many Americans would support him.

I don’t buy it but whatever. If it scares people into voting against him I’m fine it.

Yeah, I have a good friend that is a fairly moderate republican and says trump will win in a landslide. I don't buy it.
Demographics have changed over the past 4 years in the the Dems favor. Combined that with the amount of people that, following Jan 6; see Trump not just an asshole but a dangerous asshole and that’s probably enough right there to give Biden the edge.

Also, I think the MAGA enthusiasm has waned. Used to be every time we drove to the other side of the mountains we couldn’t escape MAGA/Trump signs and flags but we just drove to Packwood over Memorial Day didn’t see a single Flag, Sign, Hat, or T-Shirt. There were Far Right signs for other politicians (Semi Bird for Governor) but nothing for Trump.

You have to think constantly being angry and having grievances against people you probably have little interaction with (migrants, LGBTQ+, "woke", DEI, CRT) while you yourself are doing pretty well financially and socially has to be pretty exhausting. Hate can only fuel you so much. I think Trump is a lot like an aging rock star. People just want to hear the hits but after a while that can be pretty tiring. Then again, there's also a lot of people who long for "the good ole days" of a society that is quickly passing them by so nationalism and the use of fear of those who "don't belong" is an easy sell. I'm hoping Biden's team can get better at messaging. Yes, he's not close to decent for some but everyone not white, heterosexual, able to have kids naturally or wants to have kids, and Christian has a lot to lose if Trump wins. Maybe some are seeing that. Every day Trump tells people the worst things he's planning to do. Maybe try believing him. The Supreme Court is a perfect example of the havoc he can create and the rights everyone can lose. IVF, contraception, equal voting rights, Brown vs. Board are all on the table if he gets elected. At least Biden can sign legislation to codify those if the SC takes them away.

Last Nights episode of John Oliver's main story was about what a second term of Trump would look like.

And if you thought it was bad, well, it's somehow even worse than you were thinking.

One thing I had never heard of before watching this episode was Project 2025 or Schedule F.

Project 2025 is an intuitive set up by more than 100 conservative organizations. It's goal is very much like conservative intuitive that selects judges for our judicial system. They will have a selection of candidates for every government position who are local to the conservative cause ready to go for Day 1 of Trumps presidency to appoint.

Schedule F is something Trump issued by executive order in his final weeks in office under the radar. It was also one of the first things Biden reversed. Trump has stated Schedule F will be his first executive order when he gets back into the oval office.

Government is made up of different types of employees. If I'm remembering correctly from what John Oliver explained, 16% of government employees are political appointees. The rest are experts in their fields, full time permanent employees who have job protections against being fired for political reasons.

What Schedule F does is eliminate these protections for full time employees and allows for them to be political appointees. What this means is Trump can clean house, and get rid of anyone who does not agree with his policies or questions him, and replace them with people loyal to himself and the conservative agenda. This is dangerous because it removes the experts from the field and replaces them with ass kissers.

Project 2025 is prepared for this, and has included all these positions in their picks.

Project 2025 leaders have a goal of replacing the staff at the FDA and installing people who would unapproved chemical abortion inducing pills. Trump has mainly stayed out of commenting on this issue to date stating that it should be left up to the states on the road so far this election campaign.

Trump also plans to dismantle NOAA, because they are the government agency sounding the alarm about climate change

Project 2025 also looks like something that's going to be part of the conservative playbook going forward. They are already planing Project 2029.

I haven't heard a bout this, but looking it up, it is accurate and really happening.

It's not so much that Pornhub is now illegal, and being blocked by states and internet service providers in said states. Its rather that these states have passed laws such as any site that hosts "explicit material" be required to verify age and identity to provide access such as in Indiana. This would require sites like Pornhub to verify identity and age by having users provide a copy of their Drivers License or State ID and the use of third party verification services to verify age and identity. This all creates a cost burden and legal liability that Pornhub does not want to deal with. So, they are choosing to geofence their site and not operate within these states to avoid having to do this. It will be interesting to see if states then take issue with VPN's people are using to still access Pornhub.

On another note, one of Trumps campaign promises is to outlaw porn. And that the act of producing porn could be punishible by substainial fines and/or jail time.

Here is a little more information I found.

In 2023 Louisiana enacted a similar age verification law. What Pornhub found after complying with the law was that traffic from Louisiana dropped by more than 80%. They said people didn't stop viewing porn, they just went elsewhere to darker parts of the internet on signs that do not comply with the law. Based on this experience, the cost of compliance in additional states is not worth it to them. In addition to costs, they found that most people do not want to submit their identity to be verified to view porn. They want to protect their privacy / view anonymously.

Thus, Pornhub rather let this play out in courts and hope the courts find these laws unconstitutional.

So far they are losing in the courts. A judge in Indiana upheld the law, and would not issue a preliminary induction against it because the law is a "commonsense" way to protect children.

Wonder what Twitter will do to comply.

Right, the threat is not merely Trump himself. It's him and his blanket endorsement of whatever the worst of his loyalist like Stephen Miller want to do. That's where the true cruelty comes in. Trump is their useful idiot. Why else would pro-lifers and evangelicals be behind a man that is the total antithesis for what they used to stand for? He's the means to an end for them.
