You’re missing the point. And that’s fine for you but don’t think that your paradigm is equally applicable.
The back slapping is sufficient evidence that some of us want a tight knit community of people we trust to be authentic, make trades with, AND to post about some cool records. The issue here is that someone posed as just another one of us in order to infiltrate the group for business purposes. Businesses are welcome here as well as members who happen to be in or run businesses aimed at our demographic. We have a reasonable expectation they be above board about that fact. Violating that trust deserved outing. In this case the line of proof happened to include an address.
How that last point was handled has been called into question but is really indicative of bigger questions about what our long term leadership structure and policy might look like. Those of us invested in the community aspect are effectively making sure that you still have a place to come see posts about some cool records in the future.
As usual, I think
@debianlinux hit the nail on the head. I also think that
@Dead C 's calling out of that member was warranted and he even admitted, IIRC, that if posting the address was the issue, he was fine with it being removed. Looking back at it, I understand why there was an issue with posting the address and I also don't expect that he will post an address again for someone now that it has been said that it is against the rules (which have been vague at best mostly because I don't think it has been an issue that has come up before).
When it comes down to it, I really love this place. It's one of the least toxic forums on the internet. We might not always get along, but I think for the most part, issues get settled. My two cents, not that anybody asked for it, is that if an issue like this comes up in the future, let us know. Message users and say "Hey--we are going to remove the address you posted. We do not want public addresses posted here. Please do not post addresses in the future." I do not mean to speak for
@Dead C at all, but I've had enough interactions with him to know that I honestly do not think he posted the address with any malice intended. He was looking out for the people on this forum and letting us know that it's not cool what that member was doing. And I agree with his overall sentiment entirely.
I personally think there needs to be some transparency in this pre-order thread. We have plenty of people on this forum who own labels, record clubs and companies associated with music and let us know when new releases come out. And I love that. But they are completely transparent about who they are, what they are selling, and even if they do not participate a ton in the threads, they help answer questions and are overall valuable members to the community. I've learned about a lot of awesome music through all of the various people like that who joined and posted here. This thread in particular is about sharing music and releases to keep people up to date in case someone missed out on a release or to recommend things. It's not here for people to come in, pretend to be a member of the community by posting once about emo records and proceed to try to sell overpriced stuff on their own website while also not adding anything else. Hell, even the Vinceron guy at least included the company he works for in his username and wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes about who he was. I think there should be some sort of eye on folks like the person
@Dead C called out and they need to be told that they can't just come on here, not contribute anything and try to sell their over-priced records.
The fact of the matter is that the mods and members here have made it an awesome place. I absolutely love coming here and seeing how most of the folks here treat each other. Just in the past week, there have been lots of restocks of previously sold out stuff, and on multiple occasions, I have seen people either offering to or just flat out purchasing records for others if they couldn't get in touch with them right away. And this was all done because members here want to help each other out. And that is fucking awesome.
The mods often have a thankless job and I do appreciate all that they are doing to keep this place alive. At the same time, I think a lot of us just ask that things are transparent. If somebody does something wrong, let us know so that we all know not to do that thing. If there's clear reasoning behind it, all good. Hopefully the mods (and newer members) can understand why those of us who were also on the old VMP boards see this as a bit of a touchy subject. It's also REALLY easy to get caught up in trying to read meaning and tone into text responses on the internet. I've been guilty of this tons of times. I understand why
@Colonel_Angus doesn't want to share much more about it with someone who wasn't directly involved in the situation, but at the same time, I get why
@JonnyH is concerned, reached out to mods and then took that response the way he did. All that has to be said is "Sorry--we are still working things out. We will let the community know if more needs to be said on the matter but as of now it's private between the parties involved." Bish bash bosh--all settled.
