September 2020 Challenge Thread- The Gav-La’s

There probably is and I just don't notice it at this point.
I think the practice makes their compilations more interesting. Lots of comps are poorly sequenced, especially if it’s a greatest hits type. The intentionality that it takes to do an Echoes or Love is much more interesting to me and more likely to get me to look into a comp of stuff I may already have.

I thought Echoes was beautifully done ...it’s a great immersive listen ....one of the best compilations to own on CD ..would love a vinyl box..but only time I’ve seen one to buy was a few years back at £100+

Day 3 - Power Trio

Minutemen - 3-Way Tie (For Last)

One of my very favorite power trios. D Boon is yet another artist gone too soon.

Drum note
Drummers in trios generally get to play a lot, sometimes they even overplay. George Hurley found a great balance between the two. Very active, but still keeping it together with his mates. And he really has some creative beats. I was heavily influenced and greatly inspired by his drumming when I was in a funky-punky-jammy rock trio in the 90s.

Day 5

boxed

given the description for the day, I knew I’d be playing a record from this box. Full disclosure- I take the records out of the box and store them as the separate releases when possible (Emancipation is one release and doesn’t really function without the box) and I’m just not going to grab the boxes out of the closet for a picture, you’ll just have to believe that this is from the box and really like an Oxford comma why would I lie about something dumb like that?

the reason a record from this box is the must spin today is that I have never listened to this record before and have one more from the box that has never been spun. This is a combination of HOLY FUCKING SHIT TEN RECORDS WORTH OF CARPENTERS IS WAY MORE THAN ANYONE NEEDS and the fact that my wife (along with 95% of hip hop and Bruce Springsteen) REALLY dislikes them. She says it’s all too morose. And really as you get later in their career, Karen’s beautiful voice start to show all of the things that she was going through. There’s a weird stretch in the middle of the career where things are strange, by this point it’s full 80s nostalgia mode... harmless adult contemporary that doesn’t wow and isn’t awful just same same.

Day 4: “And now for something completely different..” ..any Record you like but with a piece of music related memorabilia to accompany it ...a gig ticket, book, t shirt , poster, funkopops.. what’s lurking out there ..autographs? Elvis’s Cadillac..yellow submarine ....

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Soul to Soul

Drum note
Chris Layton was definitely solid as the Double Trouble drummer. He never took many spotlights, he was there to let SRV shine, and why not, he was such a gem. The band was sometimes known for their moving meter; speeding up and slowing down during songs as Stevie took them along for the ride.

For memorabilia, I attached a pic of the ticket stub from when I was lucky enough to see him live on the Soul to Soul tour. It was my second-ever concert. And check it out, just over 13 bucks for 10th row.

Day 5: Box Set Weekend, Pt. 1

I feel like not a lot of 7” box sets are gonna be played today, which influenced my decision a bit here.

Al Green - The Hi Records Singles Collection

A collection of Al Green singles from the peak of his career, including “Let’s Stay Together”, “Tired of Being Alone”, “I’m Still in Love With You”, “Here I Am (Come and Take Me)”, “Love and Happiness”, etc.

Day 5: Box Set Weekend, pt. 1

Various Artists - Day of the Dead

This incredible compilation, pressed on tie dye vinyl, was curated by the Dessner brothers from the National, and they, along with the rhythm section of that band, Josh Kaufman, and a few others, serve as sort of the "house band", backing up tons of artists from across music today. With 59 songs spread out over 10 LPs, this takes the better part of the day to get through, but it's worth it. Possibly my favourite compilation of all time, and definitely one of the jewels in my collection. Faves include Phosphorescent's "Standing on the Moon", Kurt Vile and J Mascis's "Box of Rain", and Bonnie Prince Billy's "Bird

My local shop had this on it's wall forever, and I could never get around to picking it up. I'm going to have to pull the trigger on it soon though - so many good tracks!

And I thought the 13 7"s on the XTC set was a lot.

I don't think I could play a set with 26 all in one day...even if I REALLY loved the artist.

Day 5: Box Set Weekend pt 1

Spinning the extras on the It Still Moves expanded edition, don't think I've played the demos before. Not sure they're something I'd play all that often, but its always interesting to hear the genesis of songs.

Edited to add - the groove they hit at the end of En La Ceremony? That's the good stuff.

I absolutely adore this album, and they did a fantastic job with the box set. In addition to the album (which was long out of print on vinyl) it included a separate album of B-Sides and covers, a signed pic of the band, and a nice thick photo book.

I’m really hoping their follow up The Invisible Band gets the same treatment someday soon.

Day 5 - Box Set Part 1

I don’t exactly have a ton in terms of box sets but when this beauty of one of my favorites popped up on a huge discount I couldn’t resist. A 5 album / 8 LP set of Amy Winehouse’s all too short career with some display worthy glossies in a tidy, well designed box. Can’t go wrong with this for a long weekend.
