Day 5: Box Set Weekend, pt. 1

Various Artists - Day of the Dead

This incredible compilation, pressed on tie dye vinyl, was curated by the Dessner brothers from the National, and they, along with the rhythm section of that band, Josh Kaufman, and a few others, serve as sort of the "house band", backing up tons of artists from across music today. With 59 songs spread out over 10 LPs, this takes the better part of the day to get through, but it's worth it. Possibly my favourite compilation of all time, and definitely one of the jewels in my collection. Faves include Phosphorescent's "Standing on the Moon", Kurt Vile and J Mascis's "Box of Rain", and Bonnie Prince Billy's "Bird

@Gavaxeman asked for two-fer posts today. Who am I to deny this man. Let's go three-fer. Ah hell, a four-fer it is...

Alice In Chains - Dirt

Saw AIC on this tour in '92 in a small club with Gruntruck and Screaming Trees as the openers. Stood on the side between Layne and Mike Starr all night yet, somehow, Jerry managed to fling a pick over my way.

Elton John - Rock Of the Westies

My first show was Elton John in 1976 on the "Louder Than Concorde But Not Quite As Pretty" Tour. Here's the tour book I bought that's somehow made it 44 years relatively unscathed.

And now a Beatles tie-in you didn't see coming...

The Black Crowes - Amorica

In days of yore when most all musical communication was done via the good 'ol USPS (mail something today, they need us right now), many bands kicked up fan clubs that involved sending a letter and a buck or two and getting something sent back to you on a semi-regular basis. Here's my mail from The Black Crowes circa December 1995 - holiday greetings from the band and a cassette of BC drummer Steve Gorman, who never sings, singing a cover of the Fab Four's 'I Wanna Be Your Man'.

And a second Gav-la for @Yer Ol' Uncle D for awesomeness 🏆

Day 3 reflections...

Wow ..A-ha to Motörhead ..great posts ..just shows you not all about guitars

Day 4 reflections...

Awesome day ..some brilliant posts ..well done to all ...think the signed guitar was the daddy post so far ..really enjoying that day so far..feel free to play catch up or post additional stuff for day 4 if your routing round the loft

Day 5: “Box Set Weekend pt 1” - Pick one of those big box sets we never get round to playing and finally play stuff from it today....

Tortoise - A Lazarus Taxon

Three hours of b-sides, covers, and remixes from the band's first decade that live up to the high bar set by their albums... but since it's three hours it doesn't get played all that often, but then I get to rediscover it again when I do, so it all works out.

Day 4 - Boxset Weekend Pt 1
David Bowie - Live BBC Radio Theatre 2000 (actually listening this through my computer right now)
I have not owned a proper cd player in years and sold many of my cds. I kept most of my boxsets though and this is one. Remember back in the old days when if you bought one of the first 10,000 copies of an album on cd it would often come with a bonus disc? This 2000 show (records just after David's triumphant return to Glastonbury) was included in the original release of Bowie at the Beeb boxset.

Day 5: Box Set #1

I know this set triggers a lot of Pink Floyd purists, with some tracks segueing into another. I have no issues with this, and don't mind the tracks following a track from an earlier/later era.

Didn't "A Collection Of Great Dance Songs" do that too? I may be misremembering. Haven't heard that comp since the 80s I think.
