September 2020 Challenge Thread- The Gav-La’s

Day 11: “Judas!”.. Folky Acoustic stuff .. pipes, chunky jumpers and real ale etc ...

So, this is one of the favorite little pieces I own and this feels like the perfect chance to play it. I know I, and others here, have mentioned I'm With Her or the components of the group (Sarah Jarosz, Sara Watkins, and Aoife O'Donovan) before, all of which are nice folky-acoustic-bluegrass fits in their own right. However, prior to releasing their full-length, they had a few little odd ball recordings to tide our desperate ears over. The first of which I found on vinyl was a 7" of their two pre-album singles. Two covers: one of John Hiatt's Crossing Muddy Waters and the other a stomping-cover of Nina Simone's Be My Husband. CMW set the tone for the type of music they were likely expected to produce while BMH was just a little tease on the adventurous side.

These two singles drove me to do a six hour roundtrip to see Freshgrass to see them live, where I was able to grab my copy and get it signed. I've seen them a few times since but this was a special experience.

Now my pipe dream is finding those Spotify singles and maybe having them press the Little Lies CD...

Day 12: “Get Funky”

While I own a handful of Funkadelic, I own no Parliament...but that will change once I get the copy of Mothership Connection I just ordered off Amazon.

Funkadelic ‎– Funkadelic
Westbound Records ‎– SEW 010, 1970/2004?

Day 7: "Mini maxi"

Joe Pug - Nation of Heat EP

I think EPs/mini albums are the perfect size and can be just as great as full-lengths. It's all arbitrary, based on what the technology could do at the time. An album should be as long as it needs to be, and this debut, with its tight, thematically linked seven tracks, is as perfect as any regular album to me.

Day 8: Birmingham Beat

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon

Fully expecting a Brum rating of 1/10 at best for this, but since I'm so behind I was scooped on the obvious Paranoid. Wikipedia tells me that Nick Mason was born in Birmingham, though apparently entirely raised in London.

Well I didn’t know that ...2.5/10 Brummie rating as he was a quarter of the founding lineup

And A Gav-la to @BjorgenFjorgen for a Pink Floyd factoid 🌒

Day 9: “Yes but no but..”

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Continuing with a theme here...I've never been too hot on this album, and despite listening to it for almost 20 years I can't decide if it's overly bloated or genius. Obviously it has some of their best ever songs, but sometimes the in-between is a bit much for me.

Controversial! (But it’s not one I revisit often either) .. but then again ...good choice
