Day 22 - Collector’s corner

This is a promo pressing on “audiophile” (translucent brown Quiex) vinyl - looks like a copy on Discogs can be yours for the low price of $599 (I want to say I paid $25? This is one of those things I bought without knowing and learned it was valuable after I got more into collecting).

This is a particularly ear-splitting experience, since whatever sound they replaced the bass guitar with (that basically sounds like shaking a heavy piece of sheet metal) is reproduced with audiophile clarity 😬.

Cornelius - The First Question Award

I've been on a Cornelius kick lately, so now I'm listening to his fun debut, which has never had a release outside of Japan.

This probably isn't my rarest but Discogs has it as my 4th most valuable album by median and probably could go as high as second if Because the Internet gets repressed and Hamilton's repressings hit the market. It's also one of my best finds. I was digging through the used arrivals at Newbury which is usually filled with a mix of albums I'm not interested in and classic albums at double the price of the flea market they came from when I saw this one in the bin. I didn't immediately realize the relative rarity of this selection but I did really enjoy the movie and soundtrack. For $10 or so (after 15% off) it felt worth a pickup. I grabbed this and a couple others I liked and walked out for about $40.

Then I checked Discogs and was genuinely surprised as the median price is about $100 and that the wants outweigh the haves. This is really just a bonus to me but it's become very difficult to find and I'm quite happy to have it in my collection. I'm pretty confident it's one of the top five rarest items in my collection and it was a joy to stream it over lunch (I didn't want to spin this one until I upgrade my turntable).

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

(note: not my rarest or most expensive...but that other one I paid market value for so let's not go too far into that rabbit hole in my budget)

PUP - The Dream Is Over

There are a ton of pressings of this now, but I went with the (tied for) most limited variant of the SmartPunk exclusive black in highlighter yellow ltd to 200.

Day 22 - Unusual
Listen up you punks!! This is what rock'n'roll is all about, listening to a pasty semi-naked Englishman wearing a codpiece screaming "You're fuckin' pretty loud, New Jersey!"

Truly one of the greatest pieces of comedy on vinyl, slotted between Tube Bar at #1 and Jerky Boys at #3. I give you the one and only...
Venom - Live at City Gardens New Jersey

Not sure if this truly counts as a bootleg, since it is just the between-song banter by Cronos. Think of this as what happened inside the venue from the video Heavy Metal Parking Lot

You can listen to almost 9 minutes of a buffoon extolling the virtues of Newcastle Brown Ale on Youtube, but if you want this piece of vinyl you can have it for a cool $100. I might even toss in a couple cans of cheap cider as well.

Backstory: In 1986, Black Metal legends Venom played what some thought of as an unlikely bill with Rollins-era Black Flag at famed punk dump City Gardens, in scenic Trenton, New Jersey. ... Anyway, the punkers, metalheads, and general thugs who turned out for the show not only got to witness two of the more badass bands of the era sharing a stage, but were also treated to some of the most (unintentionally?) hilarious between-song stage banter ever, courtesy of Venom's knuckle-dragging vocalist Cronos. The story behind this recording is shrouded in mystery, but the local history texts claim that a Black Flag roadie recorded the entire show, cut out the middle sections of all the songs, and the subsequent stage banter and guitar intros/outros were released as an Ecstatic Peace single. The legacy of the recording is impressive, to say the least. It was sampled by the Beastie Boys on one of their records ("Because you're wild, man….. WIIIIILD!") and it's got more quotable one-liners than a Monty Python movie.

The Record Company - Feels So Good - Hand numbered #365/500, Autographed by all members

I picked this up at a small outdoor live show in 2015 for probably $20, it now lists on discogs for almost $300. I like to purchase vinyl at shows from lesser known artist, where sometimes that the only way to get s copy. If you call that collecting, then that's what i collect

The Naked and Famous - Passive Me Aggressive You

One of those albums that for some reason went out of print and then shot up in value. It’s just begging for a VMP or Newbury repress on colored vinyl.

The lead track All of This is one of my favorite songs, and features these killer lyrics:

As the plans turn into compromise
The promises all turn to lies
The spite builds up and I can't get through
Passive me, aggressive you
