September 2020 Challenge Thread- The Gav-La’s

God damn I'm so bad this month, I keep falling so far behind 😭

Day 19 - Axe Attack

St Vincent - St Vincent

Annie Clark is arguably my favorite guitarist of all time. The sounds she is able to pull off with it are never not fascinating

I almost played one of her albums that day. I first heard of her because she was opening for John Vanderslice in Salt Lake City, back before her first album came out. It was this tiny little venue, and we were just a few feet from the stage, which was really just a step up from the floor, and when she came out and started playing (alone, with just her guitar and some pedals) it got quiet really fast. It was as impressed as I'd ever been by a live act I had never heard of.

Was it Kilby Court? Quite a few cool, small venues in Salt Lake City.

Day 23: “Raise Your Hands”..- Live Albums ..let’s see them lighters...or phones

Let's see neither. Especially the phones.

Live music is the best. Dopes that show up to chit chat and hold their phones aloft all night are not.

You're missing the show, people. You're missing the show!

Yup - Kilby Court!

Edit: In fact, I found this duet someone posted from that night, in glorious crappy 2007 digital camera quality. I would have been a few feet to the left of the camera.

Ha! That's cool. Doesn't get more intimate than Kilby. You can't even tell there are other people in the room! I've seen quite a few shows there, Phoebe Bridgers in 2018 among the most recent.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 4-Way Street

This album offers one of the most complete accounts of all CSNY are capable of. I've had quite a few copies of early pressings over the years, but this 2019 RSD release is by far the best sounding version I've heard. Really happy with the quality, and I was a bit surprised to discover today that it's still available at around its original retail price.

Day 22: Valuable records

So shortly after I got back into record collecting during the late 90s, I got into funk, soul and african 45s. This one is a latin-american funky number and ended up as the most valuable record in my collection. This little piece of wax has a listed median value higher than a Bowie box set and a crazy upper value. I obviously paid nowhere near this amount for it back then and I'm quite amazed at its appreciation. The A-side track is absolute fire, which explains a bit. The B-side is pretty good too - it's more of a psych-funk track and it's in English.

The Nombres "Todos/Trivialities" (1972 Beth Records)

And if you wish to hear it, it's track #4 on here:

Day 23: “Raise Your Hands”..- Live Albums ..let’s see them lighters...or phones

I'll give y'all the live music albums for now (I have a few I love but still), it's a perfect excuse to put on a comedy album to get some levity in 2020. Today I opted for Ice Bear Demetri Martin's special Demetri Martin Live* (*at the time) which is one of the more succinct and appropriate album titles in recent memory. You wouldn't expect anything less than factually correct information from the man.
