Television

Yeah, I suppose. Rectify was such a perfect and unique show that it's just hard for me to compare it to anything else. I feel weirdly protective of it!
Thank you to you guys for recommending this show. I had never heard of it before but based on what you guys already liked I decided to give it a shot.
It’s hard to find a flaw in it. Strong writing, good acting, realistic character development arcs. I struggle to compare it with anything else. I found myself as emotionally invested in it as any tv series I’ve ever watched . Definitely more a character study and relationship dynamics themed show than a detective/mystery show
For what it’s worth my fave show ever is The Wire and other faves are Justified, Deadwood, The Killing, Sopranos, BB, Ozark, that show with Gillian whatsit from Xfiles in it.
Thanks @Indymisanthrope & @Teeeee.

Oh excellent!!! It flew under the radar a lot which is a shame. It was a perfectly executed show and one of the more satisfying endings. I'm so happy to hear you liked it!!!

This was the best episode of SNL I’ve seen in a while.
Yeah I thought it was pretty good all things considered. Though, Kate McKinnon, who I usually quite enjoy, was off her game. Her RBG skit was almost painful and the zoom call skit would have been much better had they just had Aidey Bryant. That all being said I thought Larry David’s Bernie and Baldwin’s Trump were alright. The Timothy Chalomet and Carol Baskins Master Class was spot on. Middle-Aged Mutant Ninja Turtles was Hilarious. The Twitch skit had me laughing, andI liked the Dating Show skit. Touching tribute to Hal Willner at the end was perfect too.

Yeah there were some duds, but overall it thought it was really well done. It was like a bunch of digital shorts one after another. I hope they keep going this way because it was really fun.

Anyone watch Run (hbo)? A 30 min episode is far too little for me to tell if it's good or not yet. But it entertained me.

Also does anyone watch Elite (netflix)?

So far the most unrealistic thing has been skipping over the 5hr flight that would have any normal person in a second-guessing panic by the end of it. Since she sailed through that with no problem, it was a little hard to buy into the "will she/won't she" tension at the end of the episode.

The leads are both likable, so I'll keep watching, but as of right now I don't see much here to develop a plot around. Where they're going or why they're going there seems irrelevant. It appears to be more of a means to rendezvous than a plan for something specific. The lives they had and left behind aren't important other than to know that they exist. So the stakes are: they leave their old lives behind, or they don't? ...And? Why should we care either way? What's our investment in this, and how do we sustain it for X number of episodes?

For Ruby especially, it may be difficult to sympathize with the choices she appears to have made so far (and that's only because we don't know enough about Billy yet to be able to say the same). What kind of twists could this introduce to make me go from detached entertainment to actually caring?
Yeah, that episode felt very much like an extended teaser than an actual episode. It was hard to grasp or connect with anything or anyone.

That said, I do love Merritt. And Donhall is pretty great. And I trust in Phoebe. So we'll see where it goes.

a bad moment i had made my really think of bojack horsemans finale

the popular theory is that bojack dies at the penultimate episode. and that the final episode is just him forgiving himself before he goes away forever. i feel uncomfortable with that, i hate the fact that every action that you do will be put against you no matter how much you improve, that if you are a bad person once you can never be a good person, and that he deserved to be treated worse.... i see myself in bojack, i made bad mistakes in my life, even recently, that i regret and want to change from, and what this theory kind of says is im just the worst no matter what... it triggers my depression and makes me wonder if there is any hope for me...

i am hoping that you can be a good person after all the bad you've done

Oh holy moly! I've been hearing this show's name all week and I never made the connection; the show is based on art by this Swedish artist I've been following for the better part of a decade now, Simon Stalenhag. His work involves suburban and pastoral settings, with sci-fi elements dropped in. Here's a favorite or two of mine:

He does a really good job of integrating the mundane with the fantastic, and honestly, his work has this Chris Van Allsberg sort of magic and potential which I think is best left explored in the imagination than through narrative film or fiction. I think I'll have to check the show out, though; if it's inspired by this work, it'll probably have some interesting vibes.

Does anybody know anything about this new Amazon show Tales from the Loop? Do I understand correctly that it's based on...paintings?

Edit: The AV Club is pretty enthusiastic about it, which is usually good enough for me.

I was unsure what it was based on too, but yeah seeing the positive review made me curious enough to give it a shot today.

Would you recommend the show? It sounds interesting almost like Black Mirror, but less fancy.

Some random guilty pleasures I'm watching right now (in no specific order):
  • The Good Witch
  • Criminal Minds (I can rewatch this all the time; which I often do. I love Penelope and Morgan’s relationship),
  • Sherlock
  • IT Crowd
  • Community (first time watching this, so far so good)
  • We Bare Bears
  • 100 Humans
  • BEASTARS
  • Kipo and the age of wonder beasts
  • Cinderella and the four knights (Korean drama)
  • Explained
  • Broken
  • Schitt’s Creek (I'm going to miss this show, it's so underappreciated)
  • Kim’s Convenience
  • Love is Blind
  • Tiger King (Sardine oil!?!?)
Any recommendations? I have Netflix and Amazon Prime.

We only watched the pilot but based on that I would say Black Mirror isn’t the right comparator. This has more of almost a fairy tale vibe in some ways. It has sort of a strange-yet-familiar look and feel that calls to mind something more like the original Amazing Stories or something like that. It’s weird; it feels like the right comparison is right on the tip of my tongue but I can’t quite think of it.

For as great as it looks, we honestly found it just a touch too slow, and haven’t been motivated to get back to it quite yet.

So would it be more like the Once Upon a Time Netflix show that is about the fairy tales? I liked that one.
