Television

Watched the first couple episodes of Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities and thought they were a ton of fun. Nothing deep or thought provoking, but good, old-fashioned scary stories with some pretty horrifying monster design and stylish direction. Perfect spooky season, or, if you are me, random January viewing.
It's a mixed bag, but it's kind of fun seeing how differently each episode hits for everyone. Eps I didn't care for seem to be a hit with lots of people, and I can hella appreciate that!

My faves were 8. The Murmuring, 7. The Viewing, and 3. The Autopsy.

I’m a big fan of the games. Part 2 is my favorite game of all time. But, so far, the Last of Us show has given me more “wow they’re making a really good TV adaptation” feelings than “hell yeah this is my favorite new show” ones.

Tonight’s episode had me like “This is some peak-Leftovers, all-time favorite shit.” That is how you do it on the next level.

Oh shit, today is Sunday! I got home from work and saw y'all talking new LoU. I thought it was Saturday. I was like, what are y'all asshats (thought w/ love) talking about?! Turns out....I'm the asshat (thought w/ self-deprecation)!!! Awwwww snappity snap!

Edit: Oh, man, I still wish I thought it was Saturday. Fuck, man, Bill & Frank!!!! I'm not crying, you're crying, asshat!

Also, didn't dawn on me till near the end that Frank is dude from S1 of White Lotus.

I guess with The Last Of Us I should just keep not expecting it to be one thing. Cause last nights episode was something I just didn’t expect to see on this show. How is this even from a video game? And where does the story even go from here? It’s exciting.

So this deviated heavily from the game while maintaining the function of Bill and Frank in the game.

SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED....

In the game, you arrive and Bill's and he is lowkey grieving because Frank has disappeared after a big fight. The paranoid, isolationist / survivalist side of Bill has grated on Frank. You sort of piece parts of this together via Franks behavior as well as environmental storytelling. For example, at one point Ellie finds a gay porno mag and makes a joke about the pages being stuck together.

As Bill helps you get across town several things happen. A) Frank is used as a mirror for Joel, where his bitterness sort of helps shine a light on the problematic side of Joel's current mindset. Frank basically tells Joel that in the world they live in, relationships only serve to cause problems and emotional pain B) Ellie gets ample character development via her interactions with Frank.

Then right before you get to the car battery, you come across Franks body. He had gotten bitten and decides to off himself before he can turn. You find the suicide note and in it, it's made clear why Frank has left-- that he hates how closed off and paranoid his lover is and would rather live in the QZ where there is a chance of community. The note becomes a catalyst for Joel to reexamine the life his is living.

(That's my hazy memory of it anyways).

So again, same function different approach. In the show, Bill helps Joel contemplate the point of surviving via the purpose his relationshipwith Frank gave him. In the game, Bill helps shine a light on the path Joel is on and what he doesn't want to become.

I think nearly every fan of the game, save incells, really enjoyed last night's episode but the one critique Ive seen is that it takes away from the character development of Ellie and erases some.of her best moments in the game.

I wonder if the show will focus on Ellie's character development and those particular moments you speak of via a flashback in a future episode? 🤔

I CANT GET SPOILER TAGS TO WORK FROM MY PHONE...

I mean, the character development is obviously coming. But in this version Ellie never meets Bill so their dynamic can't exactly be added via flashback. It is what it is, and I'm fine trading it for the episode of television that we got.
