Television

I'm all in for The Last Of Us, and I wasn't super anticipating it or anything. I have heard about the game for years, but I didn't even know what it was about. So I was skeptical of the adaptation just cause...video game adaptation doesn't scream great to me. But I was impressed with that first episode. Excited to see where it goes.

Watched the first episode of The Last of Us. Liking it so far. I was leery of another zombie apocalypse show but the leads were always going to draw me in. Solid first episode and ending with Depeche Mode is always nice. Happy to have Sunday appointment viewing again on HBO.

Wow the second episode of The Last of Us. I have to calm down after all the jumping I did. I’m going to have to go back and rewatch now that I know what happens.
Just starting the 2nd ep. now. Loving the series so far, and how it's filling in some gaps from the game's story.

I have never been so happy with an adaptation to "film". It's a relief considering what a disappointment The His Dark Materials was. But also straight joy.

I always felt in the minority as an avid video game fan while working in the film industry. An a lot of gaming journalists and podcasters struggle with the passivity inherent to film.

I feel like this show is gonna help bridge the gap on both sides.

Just finished watching The Rig on Prime. Some sort of Prime/UK joint. Started out as a haunted house on an oil rig and then shifted to millennials vs boomers trying to save the world.

Would have been an ok 4 ep series, but they had to drag it out for 6 and then leave it with cliff hanger. Pretty clunky overall, and cliff hanger is annoying.

I made it through the first 3 episodes. This has made me less interested in finishing it ☹️

But the real question is was it a definitive audiophile experience?
How was the score? Blanck Mass usually does right by me.

I saw that you commented on this post and some others on here went back and left reacts on it and was concerned that you were going to ask if I was still tracking all of the shows people have posted about here (I have not). But yeah, I’m not sure why I had you down for the Leftovers if you never watched it. I’m guessing that I either saw a post that you made that sounded excited about the show or confused you with someone else (or confused the leftovers with another show that you liked)…the possibilities are endless, haha. I do know that the Leftovers is one of the all-time best shows I’ve ever seen, though, and would highly recommend it to you.

If you just watch the show and love it, then the issue kind of takes care of itself, right? 🤓
i think it’s one of those shows that i’m too scared to watch alone, and having gone through a really bad breakup of sorts recently, i won’t be bingeing tv with somebody else for a while.
that said! i’m glad your not tracking tv faves anymore because oof. but on the topic of leftovers…

has anyone watched mosquito coast and should i??

i’m like 99.99999% sure that someone here posted the new yorker article about it, the development, the importance of narrative design for games and how it should be translated to tv versus how it has been in the past, and also the collaborative process. the article made me want to watch it. i have never played the game. i’m only good at 2d.

i have to watch it with my neighbor because it’s one of those shows i am too scared to watch alone. we are going to watch episode 2 tomorrow. very excited for it.

has anyone watched loot? i watched it thinking it would be good background tv while doing other things, but it was actually good. i enjoyed it.
and on that topic…..a question:

❓❔what are y’all’s favorite or go-to tv shows that you let play but don’t really have to pay attention to, but also isn’t some dumb-as-fuck reality show that makes you want to gouge your eyes out and shove pencils in your ears?

We have a few that we rotate through regularly; Cheers, Seinfeld, The Simpsons, 30 Rock, The Office, Parks & Recreation, Golden Girls, Bob’s Burgers, Newhart, Frasier, Late 80s to Mid 90s SNL.

I loved the first season of mosquito coast. Haven't gotten to the second yet. Very cool that his dad wrote the book and he's getting to make the show of it.

Anyone catch the most recent season of Alone? I really am burnt on the formula, but we stuck it out and it got pretty interesting at the end.

Juan Pablo's fasting was an amazing (and seemingly risky) feat but he won, and looked pretty good despite that. Plus not even having a fire until day 60-something. What?? And he drank water without boiling it, said he tries to drink 'sketchy' water throughout the year to prepare. I wonder if future contestants will study his approach and train for it that way.

And, 2nd place Kerrie Lee was not my front runner for making it that far, but the more I watched her, the more I liked her. She had such a great spirit.

Good to see you around here! Hope Los Feliz is treating you well. I left Echo Park for Chicago at the end of 2021. Part of me misses it badly but when I went back to visit in December I mostly found it depressing because all my institutions that made it home for over a decade were gone. (RIP Sunset Beer and the Sattelite).

Try Nailed It on Netflix. On paper it's a "dumb-as-fuck" reality show, but after a while it gets really funny and enjoyable,

I LOVE Alone!

Juan Pablo is probably the most hardcore winner in the whole show. I don't think anyone would even attempt something like that (no fire, not boiling water for almost the whole time).

There's still technically another season called "Alone: Frozen" where some contestants return to compete much closer to winter time so they have less time to prepare. Idk why it's not season 10, but it's the same show just titled differently.

Where is it streaming? I’ll give it a try.

I’ve not played the video game and this is on my list to watch. My produce guy (who I have a date with on Friday) is highly anticipating this one and said that I had to check it out.
hulu!!

also i just finished watching seasons 1 & 2 of Only Murders In The Building (hulu) and The Other Two (hbo max), and i thoroughly enjoyed both. The Other Two took an episode or two for me to really get into it, but is so worth it.

thank you for this. sometimes i just need someone to make an inconsequential decision for me.

i forgot to say that shows where people are making, baking, creating are a different category of reality shows. they’re as much a reality show as football.

watched e2 of last of us last night. loved it, looked away a lot - but also:
WHY DONT PEOPLE EVER STOCK UP ON OR TAKE OTHER PEOPLES AMMO??? OR GUNS?? do they just have endless bullets? also, take some grenades! this is something i am always yelling at shows and movies. i don’t know why it bothers me so much, other than i only know how to live in survival mod.

for some reason i decided i’m going to rewatch all of the good wife.

Cobra Kai is good background TV.

Abbot Elementary is very easy, safe, comfort TV but not necessarily background TV (although maybe it is?).

Lately, I’ve put on the pilot or finale episodes of TV shows I missed out on and have no plans to actually watch. Did that with Just Shoot Me, Two and a Half Men, and That 70’s Show and it’s entertaining to see how they start/end without caring how they progress/lead to that point.

Reminds me I still need to check out "That 90's Show" on Netflix.
I saw the first half of the first episode. It was fun enough but I don’t know if I’ll keep watching. It seems like they’re (rightly) aiming for younger viewers with the actual story beyond the cameos for the older audience.
