Television

We finished Brand New Cherry Flavor last night and I don't know what to make of it.
It was funny at times, creepy a bit, very strange, a bit of gore, had a VERY strange 'sex' scene.
The cast was good, the plot was ok, the offhanded way it was presented was strange.
Uneven is a good word to use I guess.

We've been rewatching Veep. I don't remember much of seasons 3 and 4 but I did remember some parts of season 5, so I guess I had seen up to some episodes in season 5 when it aired. I liked seasons 3 and 4 a lot in this rewatch. The characters became somewhat likeable and you were rooting for Selina more. Seasons 1 and 2 were fine, but it was going through some growing pains until it hit it's stride in those two seasons. Anyways, I think it should have ended after season 5. Without divulging spoilers it was a perfect ending point for the whole premise of the show. All that season 6 is doing is making me hate Selina even more than I did before, which I didn't think was possible. She's truly a selfish, disrespectful, awful, conniving person. Probably one of the most two-faced characters in all of Television. Great show, but season 6 is a slog. I hope it ends better with the 7th and final season.

If I remember, Ianucci left the show later in its run, and the showrunners changed direction with the election of trump. The last season is pretty solid with what they do with it (especially the series finale, which is great) but yeah she's definitely a terrible person.

I don’t think Selina was ever supposed to be a Michael Scott-esque lovable fool. This shows main point is that 99.99% of politicians are some combination of Narcissists, Assholes, and/or Dumb Fucks. I think the middle seasons were too soft on her and I am glad the moved it back to her being a more of a self-absorbed shit in season 6. The whole season feels like the bizarro version of the final season of The West Wing which sadly feels more truthful than that idealistic liberal fantasy that The West Wing gave us.

This Halloween season, I've been enjoying Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, a miniseries from 2004 that parodies shitty horror pulp shows from the 80s. Features very young (and still extremely funny) Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry.

All on Youtube!

Garth Marenghi is the best. I believe Noel Fielding and Julian Barrett make appearances too.

There's also a spin-off series called Man To Man With Dean Learner.

The Fall of the House of Usher is continuing the great trend of gothic horror provided by Hill House and Bly Manor.

Pro tip: when you sit down for the beginning of Episode 3 don't be eating pasta with red sauce. No spoilers here, but you'll thank me later. In fact, just don't be eating. Maybe hard foods like a granola bar or something.

We haven't started it yet, but plan to some time this week. Thank you for the warning!

Have been watching Bosch: Legacy and Lessons in Chemistry. I do prefer bingeing shows so the week long wait between episodes is frustrating.

Watched the first ep of House of Usher and thought it was ok. Frequently enjoy Mike Flanagan's work enough for the ideas and vibes, but I don't think he can write dialogue to save his life. You can tell it wants to be Succession so bad. Also think his rotating group of actors aren't great. Might continue with a couple more. My minimal commitment to TV is bleeding over even to miniseries at this point.

To be honest I felt similarly at first, but I stuck with it and just enjoyed the atmosphere. I still think some of the dialogue is bad, and some of the acting…oof. But as a whole I’ve enjoyed the ride especially once you get into the groove.

I've been enjoying the HELL out of Gen V. Reckon I like it even more than The Boys, tbh - which I didn't know would be possible but here we are!
This last episode
Where they spent most of the episode in Cate's head
was fantastic. Expanded out and humanized all the characters quickly. And some amazing acting as well.
